Is it safe/difficult to travel in Greece

Good news for everyone, Greece is rarely under a travel warning. It is advised for travelers to always be cautious in every way possible for their own safety. We recently visited ThessalonikiSantoriniMeteora and Mykonos this year and didn’t encounter such crime, we were not harmed at all. With this, I can probably tell that it is safe to travel in Greece.

Best time to visit in Greece

The weather in Greece varies from time to time so better be prepared for the sudden change of weather during your stay.  The best time to visit Greece is the months of April-June (Spring) and September-October (Autumn) is when the Shoulder season takes place. This time it offers you to enjoy and embrace the fun that Greece has to offer. In these times you’ll see that prices for tours and hotels go down.

Visa in Greece

Greece is part of the Schengen Area this only means that you can enter countries that are also part of the Schengen Country. If you belong to a country that does not belong to a Schengen agreement it is a must to apply for a visa. There are 62 countries that can enter the country visa-free and they can stay up to 90 days. USA is one of the countries that can enter Greece visa-free.

Cash in Greece

The currency of Greece is Euro like most western countries in Europe. The rate is €1 is equivalent to $1.06. Remember that there is also foreign currency exchange in the country. Mostly in an area that tourist visits often. For ATMs there is a lot that you can choose from, it is available everywhere but most shops, restaurants, and hotels accepts card for transaction.

In the world’s current situation right now, WiFi is very much available anywhere. In Greece, you can access free WiFi in places like cafes, shops and of course in the comforts of your accommodation.

When looking for accommodation online the first thing that we are looking for is that they offer WiFi. For us, our work is online and we spend a lot of time in front of our computers.

There are many foods that you should try in Greece, you can spend €3-7 per meal. You should probably try gyros and souvlaki, this has become one of our favorite food to eat in Greece. It comes with salad, sauce and French Fries. The cost of each starts from €2-3. Bougatsa is a custard pastry available in Greece.

You can find this anywhere in the country, the price of this piece of pastry is €2.40. And you should definitely try their go-to Greek food Baklavas. There are fine restaurants where you can a three-course meal for €10 and the food is amazing in Greece. We loved it feta cheese, gyros, souvlaki and salad so much!

Accommodation budget travel in Greece

A lot of budget option is available for accommodation in Greece. Where you can sleep in a dorm room or a room from €10-25, while you can stay in a budget hotel for as low as €50. There are so many to choose from depending on what type and how luxurious you want your stay to be starting from €100. 

If you are traveling in Greece outside the peak season prices will be much cheaper and you will avoid crowded places like Santorini, Mykonos and visit the Parthenon in Athens. There are AirBnB options in Greece where you can have budget accommodation and a local experience at the same time

There are a lot of beautiful place and tourist spots that you should visit in your stay in Greece. One example is visiting one of UNESCO World Heritage list, and this is the Hagia Sofia. It is a beautiful temple and has Domed Basilica style temple, and it is really amazing and astonishing.  You can also visit Rotunda in Greece. It is a piece of history in the Heart Thessaloniki, it is a mausoleum for Galerius.

Where you’ll be able to admire the works of Roman of Byzantine Era, the entrance fee is €2The Acropolis Museum will let you be tempted to enter the glorious world of ancient Athens, the entrance fee would be €20. There are a few museums and tourist spots in Greece where you will have free entrance. One of the most popular tourist spots is Oia in Santorini where you can watch an amazing sunset!

Local transportation in Greece

You can access different local transportation all around the country. But the most convenient one is by buses like we did. You can buy prepaid cards in shops or vending machines inside the bus. A standard ticket for one journey may cost €1, but if you want to you can purchase an unlimited journey ticket. You can only access the Metro in Athens since it is the only city in Greece with a subway system.

This is very cheap, safe and reliable. You can buy a ticket for €1.20 per journey. Or you can ride the taxi if you want to be much comfortable in your travel all throughout in some cities in Greece.

For long distances, bus and train has similar prices so you can choose whatever is matching better to your comfort or schedule for your trip.

Budget Travel in Greece per day

In your daily budget travel in Greece, for your meal, you can spend €3-7 for a meal. You can go for gyros and soulvaki, salad’s has become our quick snacks while visiting the country. Transportation is very cheap in Greece you can choose from many option, mostly the travel will cost you around €2 per day depending on where you’re going.

The most expensive will be ferries around islands like Mykonos and Santorini because buses and trains are affordable. And for accommodation, there are many that you can choose from a budget dorm room for €10-25 if you choose to travel with budget. This budget travel will depend on how much luxurious your stay would be.
