Santorini is one of the Cyclades islands in the Aegean Sea. It was devastated by a volcanic eruption in the 16th century BC, forever shaping its rugged landscape. The whitewashed, cubiform houses of its 2 principal towns, Fira and Oia, cling to cliffs above an underwater caldera (crater). They overlook the sea, small islands to the west and beaches made up of black, red and white lava pebbles.

How to get to Santorini

How to get to Santorini by Plane

You can travel on a plane to Santorini by choosing flights that land at Santorini (Thira) National Airport. There are regulars trips to Santorini from Athens that last 30 minutes while the 35-minute flights coming from Mykonos, Crete and Rhodes mostly operate only in the summer. The peak season also heralds the arrival of flights from Milan (2 ½ -3 hours), Amsterdam (3 ½ hours), Brussels (3 ½ hours), London (4 hours), Copenhagen (5 hours) and Oslo (5 ¾ hours). Upon arriving at the airport, you can then take buses to Fira, the capital, where you can transfer to different buses to reach other villages. You can also ride a cab to go anywhere in Santorini for around €10-14. Hotel transfers are also a common and practical way to leave the airport though these services are more expensive than a taxi ride. The island also has the Aegean Taxi app that you can download when you travel Santorini.

1. Oia Sunset

Oia is a coastal town on the northwestern tip of Santorini, a Greek Aegean island. The town has whitewashed houses carved into the rugged clifftops, and overlooks a vast caldera filled with water. In a 19th-century mansion, the Naval Maritime Museum has exhibits on local seafaring history, including old figureheads, sailors’ chests and models of old ships. Nearby the town is the ruined Oia Castle, where you’ll see the most incredible sunset view. You can’t miss as most instagrammable places in Santorini.

How to get to Oia? Coming from Fira, you can just ride a bus going to Oia. Buses from Fira goes to Oia every twenty minutes.

2. Hiking from Fira to Oia

If you’re in for an adventure with spectacular rewards, you should go on a hike from Fira to Oia. By going on this trail, you can explore the beautiful landscape and the sister villages of Fira, Firostefani and Imerovigli, and the final stop Oia. This highly recommended hike can take around 3-5 hours but you’ll be rewarded with many unique views of the sea and Santorini’s caldera. Once you reach Oia, you can relax in one of the cafes or restaurants there, then descend to the beautiful Amoudi Bay. Make sure to start early and bring lots of water on this beautiful hike.

How to get to Fira? Taking a taxi from Santorini airport to Fira is the easiest and quickest transfer option. Taxis are available 24/7, and only take 25 minutes to reach Fira. There is no flat rate fee for taxis at Santorini airport, they are charged by a taximeter based on distance. The approximate fee to Fira will be €35.

Here, you’ll get to go cliff jumping and swimming in crystal clear waters and sample the fresh seafood in the quaint tavernas in the area. Amoudi Bay is also a great place to watch the Santorini sunset.

How to get to Amoudi Bay? When you get off your tender boat at Fira, before you walk to the cable car station – there is a booth selling 15 min speedboat transfers to Ammoudi Bay, Oia for €25. This also includes a private bus ride from Amoudi Bay to Oia Town as well as a private bus ride from Oia back to Fira. This is run by NST Travel.

6. Explore Fira

Firá is the modern capital of the Greek Aegean island of Santorini. A traditional settlement, “Firá” derives its name from an alternative pronunciation of “Thíra”, the the ancient name of the island itself. Fira is a city of white-washed houses built on the edge of the 400 meters (1,312 feet) high caldera on the western edge of the semi-circular island of Thera.

7. Visit Red Beach

One of the most famous beaches in Santorini is Red Beach in Akrotiri. The beach can be found at the southernmost part of the island, 12 km away from Fira, close to the village and ancient site of Akrotiri. This magnificent beach got its name from the redness of the rocks in the area and has breathtaking views from the shore and its dark blue waters. All the colors of the rocks, water, pebbles and other natural elements make Red Beach a truly picturesque location.

How to get to Red Beach? Take the bus from Thira to Akrotíri and then either take the boat directly to the beach (€5 RT) or hike about 15 minutes from the bus stop. You can also take boats directly from Perissa to Red Beach or from Kamari to Red Beach.

8. Imerovigli

Imerovigli is a village on the island of Santorini, Greece, adjacent to the north of the island capital Fira. Imerovigli is mostly famous for its beautiful sunset, that it is called “balcony to the Aegean”. Its houses are built amphitheatrically around the caldera and it is crossed by narrow, paved paths.

How to get to Imerovigli? From Fira, you can ride a bus going to Oia and drop off at Imerovigli and vice versa. You can also walk if you want to explore more of the place.

9. Spend a day in Perissa Beach

Known for its black sand, crystal clear waters and convenient facilities, Perissa Beach is one of the best beaches in Santorini. The beach is 7 km long and also has views of Mesa Vuono that makes the place even more attractive. It is a great place to visit as Perissa Beach has everything you need, from sunbeds and budget hotels to cafes and bars to restaurants and tavernas.

How to get to Perissa Beach? You can ride a bus from Oia going to Perissa. Taxi can also be an option and the cost can be €25-€30.

10. White Beach

White Beach is the pride of the southwest coast and like the Red Beach, it got its name from the white rocks and pebbles that rule the color palette of this destination. White Beach can also be found in Akrotiri and is surrounded by towering white cliffs. The water is also spectacular, with caves and crevices to be explored. Because of the lack of amenities (apart from some sunbeds, umbrellas and a small canteen), it has become one of the less crowded and more peaceful beaches in Santorini. White Beach is 11 km away from Fira and is 9 km from Perissa Beach.

How to get to White Beach? In order to reach the White Beach, you need to either board one of the boats that make the trip from the port of Akrotiri or the nearby Red Beach, either of course rent a boat, to make an independent route. However, if you want to enjoy this strange beach as well as the nature of the island in all its glory and away from the crowds, you can reach it on foot.
