PERUVIAN BEVERAGES: ALCOHOLIC DRINKS IN PERU

1. PISCO SOUR

Pisco Sour is the National Drink in Peru. It is the most representative of their culture, and of course, its beginnings is native to the country of Peru. It even has its own holiday! This Pisco Sour national holiday is celebrated every first Saturday of February.

The Peruvian Pisco Sour is a mix of pisco brandy at its base (check Pisco no. 2 on drinks), with a mix of lime juice, syrup, egg white, and Angostura bitters. This drink can be served with or without ice, and has a mix taste of sweetness with a little tartness.

2. PISCO

Pisco originated in Peru and Chile, and each has their own distinct flavors. It’s a type of brandy, and is the base for Pisco Sour. Peruano or Peruvian Pisco comes from variety of grapes, and is still made traditionally, but has a lot of places in Peru that uses machine to create them.

3. CHILCANO

If you like the taste of Pisco Sour, but is looking for a drink that is not immediately too heavy, or will make you drunk easy (because trust us, Pisco and Pisco Sour have very high alcohol content), Chilcano is what the Peruvian locals drink. This is still Pisco, with ginger ale, lime, and angostura bitters. It’s much lighter and refreshing!

4. CAÑA ALTA

Caña Alta is another popular spirit in Peru, and one of the top Peruvian drinks to try when you are in Peru. Caña Alta is usually made in Ollantaytambo, or in Sacred Valley in Cusco, at Destileria Andina. It’s a high quality and clear, spirit from sugar cane. Try it if this is a drink of your liking.

5. ANISADA

The keyword for this drink is Anis, which we have found is something Peruvians love to add to some of their main dishes, even bread! The Peruvian drink, Anisada is made in Curahuasi. This is a place in Peru where a lot of Anis is grown.

6. PERUVIAN WINE

Just like Pisco, Peru has a lot of good and Peruvian-made wines. We were able to try one from Arequipa, and despite the sweet tone to it, it was actually really delicious and easy for drinking with meals.

7. BEER

Beer is of course one of the drinks that you can get in Peru. The most popular beer brands are Pilsen Callao, Cusqueña, and Cristal. We definitely love Cusqueña and one of the favorite beers we’ve had in South American for sure!

8. CHICHA DE JORA

This beer dates back to the ancient Incan times, considered one of the Incas favorite beer. Chicha de Jora has been part of the Incan rituals, and if you’re looking at alternatives to the traditional beer drink, you can check this out.

9. CAÑAZO

Cañazo is Peru’s cane brandy, and definitely more on the stronger side of Peruvian’s alcoholic beverages, so make sure you relax when having these.

10. CHICHA

Chicha is a traditional Peruvian drink made from corn, quinoa and other grains.

11. CHICHA DE FRUTILLA

A brother of Chica de Jora, Chica de Frutilla is the version which has added strawberries, making the beverage sweeter than its other version with a light pink color to it.

12. CHICA MORADA

If you’ve seen purple drinks served in Peru, whether you are in a Peruvian household, or in local shops, served with your meals, this is the Chicha Morada. The drink in Peru to have, when you’re looking for a non alcoholic type of drink.

Chicha Morada comes from purple corns, and can also be used to create Peruvian desserts. Chicha Morada has a light fruity taste, resembling berries, and is an easy, refreshing drink on its own, or partnered with food.

13. EMOLIENTE / PERUVIAN TEA / PERUVIAN BARLEY TEA

For warm drinks in cold Peruvian mornings, emoliente or herbal tea is common. You can have it as sweet or pure as you want, perfect for those mornings you’re not ready for coffee yet, or not wanting to start your morning with jugo or juices.

14. INCA KOLA

While traveling in South America, we noticed the fancy people have for drinking soft drinks on its own, or with their meals and snacks. Although we are not the biggest fans of soda, we definitely tried some of the top sodas, to see why they love it.

Inca Kola is almost synonymous with water when drinking outside the home in Peru. A lot of people have them for refreshments. Compared to a regular soda, the InCa Kola has a lighter, almost bubble gum taste, and definitely on the sweeter side of things.

15. REFRESCO

South Americans love their juices, and in Peru, you’ll see refrescos and homemade juices everywhere, especially served with your almuerzo (lunch) or senha (dinner). Definitely a great way to have some juice in with your food, and if you’re having a particularly hot weather, it’s the perfect drink. If it’s the winter, Peruvians usually serve their drinks hot.

16. LIMONADA / LIMONADA PERUANA

Limonada is Peru’s take on Lemon tea. We have tried it a couple of times in Peru, and definitely love the freshness it brings!

17. COFFEE / PERUVIAN COFFEE

Just like a lot of high-altitude places in South America like Colombia, Peru is considered to produce good coffee. Coffee tastes varies depending on region, and whether you are tasting just the coffee beans or with mixtures of other aromas and fruits, but if you love coffee, Peru is definitely a good place to try.

18. CAFE CON LECHE

Cafe con Leche in the mornings is always perfect. In Peru, they use evaporated milk to make their coffee creamier and tastier.

19. COCA / MATE DE COCA

Coca is very popular in Cusco Region, and other high-altitude regions in Peru. Coca drink is believed to have good effects when helping you fight against high altitude sickness.

Boiling the leaves, and drinking it not only helpw with the altitude, it’s actually a refreshing hot drink to have during the cold weather in these mountainous and high regions of Peru.

20. JUGO DE PAPAYA

Peru is a wonderful country, full of delicious food, and some of the freshest fruits and vegetables we’ve ever tasted. If you want to start your Peruvian mornings colorful and healthy, might we suggest starting your day with some jugo de papaya or papaya juice!

21. JUGO ESPECIAL

Jugo Especial is another great Peruano breakfast or Peruvian breakfast that you can have. It’s also a fruit juice, and is a mix of various fruits, algarrobina (a special fruit syrup in Peru), dark beer or malt, with raw egg. It’s basically an upgrade to your regular Peruvian juice!

22. ALGARROBINA

Algarrobina is a sweet syrup added to fruit juices in Peru, makes a lot of the fruit juices taste much sweeter, that it deserved its own name.

EXOTIC PERU DRINKS TO TRY

23. UVACHADO

Uvachado is a an exotic Peruvian drink soaked in cane brandy or Cañazo for a few months, added with honey. Uvachado is a popular drink in Tarapoto and big parts of the Peruvian’s San Martin region.

It is highly recommended to consume this drink in moderation because of its high alcohol content and suppsedly aphrodisiac effects. It is usually served in festivals.

24. CHUCHUHUASI

Chuchuhiasi is tree you can find in the Amazon, with its bark producing an exotic Peruvian drink with the same name. Drinking Chuchuhuasi, like the other alcoholic exotic drinks in this list needs to be regulated.

Apart from the usual alcoholic and aphrodisiac effects, Chuchuhuasi is also known as medicinal drink for rheumatic diseases, muscle and joint pains, fever, stomach pains and bronchitis.

25. RC / ROMPE CALZÓN

Also found in the Peruvian Amazon, mixing barks of trees and soaked for a while, RC or Rompe Calzon is most popular for its aphrodisiac elements.

26. 7 RAICES

This exotic Peruvian drink can be found in the Amazon and is made from mixing 7 different roots and barks mixed together: cat’s claw, fierro caspo, chuchuhuasi, murare, icoja, cumaceba and sangre de grado. These are soaked with cañazo for a couple of months, and then also sweetened with honey.

7 raices, in addition for it being an exotic Peruvian drink from the Amazon, is also popular for its medicinal benefits. It’s common medicine for flu, but the use needs to be very regulaed, because it has high energetic components and also considered an aphrodisiac.

27. LEVANTATE LÁZARO

Want to stay “up all night”, not really watching TV? ha! Well if you know what we mean, this drink helps men maintain their libido and strength the whole night. Talk about not needing medicines! According to Peruvian beliefs, only a few sips of Levantate Lazaro is enough.
