Is it safe/difficult to travel in Honduras

There are a lot of thing to do and places to visit in Honduras. When you visit Honduras everyone is advised to avoid wearing fancy jewelry or displaying fancy things. Don’t forget to be mindful because you are visiting a different country and remember that their culture is different from yours.

Women are advised to be vigilant because they think that they are vulnerable and they are easy prey. When I was backpacking in Honduras in 2012, you can’t access bus to travel at night because it is dangerous. But in my travel to take transportation during the day, and that’s what I did and didn’t have any problem and not scratch. So yes, it is safe to travel in Honduras just be cautious.

Best time to visit in Honduras

In Honduras it is mostly hot and humid all year rounds. The country is a tropical nation, typical dry season is from the months of November to April and wet season is fro the months of May to October. Dry season is the best time to visit and fully enjoy the Caribbean coast.

And Caribbean coast gets plenty of rain during the months of September to February. The best time to visit Honduras is during the peak season from the months of January to June, in this months the weather is dry and cool in most parts.

Visa in Honduras

There are many countries that requires a Visa to enter the country for 90 days. You only have to present your passport that is valid for at least 6 months. Visa extension are available upon entering the country. Countries that does not belong to the list of country visa free, they are required to get a tourist card from their consulate. Although everyone is required to have a ticket for return. And it is better to plan your trip well to avoid any problems with your visa.

Cash in Honduras

Honduran Lempira (HNL) is the currency of Honduras and $1= 24 lempiras. Almost everywhere in the country you can access ATMs. And if you do need to withdraw cash, I would advise you to withdraw in Airport. Don’t worry most of the ATMs in the country is reliable. I would recommend you a tip and this is to have a separate bank account for travels.

Internet in Honduras

We are now in the era the internet is everything. In Honduras there is this program called “Internet para el Pueblo” it means Internet of the People. And this only mean one thing you can access free WiFi in town squares, parks and plazas in Honduras. Keep in mind that also most establishments have free WiFi for their costumers.

There are 3 major network providers in the country and these are Tigo, Claro, and Honducel. Sim cards can cost roughly for $2 and when you buy there are credit bonuses. You can access 2GB internet data in your phone for 7 days for as low as $8.

For food in Honduras, you wouldn’t have a problem getting them. There are plenty budget-friendly authentic local restaurants in every city of the country. 

Just to give you an info some local meal can cost you less than $3, and having a meal at a restaurant can cost $5.50. Beer in the country is $1.-2. If you want to save up some money while you are in Honduras or you just want to travel on a budget. There are many ways to achieve that let’s start with accommodation. You can find hotels, B&Bs and apartments. With a dorm, expect to pay $7-9 per night.

Those who want to feel much comfier staying in hotels can cost you a minimum budget of $12.50. AirBnB is also available in the country the minimum budget for BnB in the country can cost you $15-25. These budget will vary depending on how luxurious your stay would be.

Roatan is lying in the southern edge of the second-largest barrier reef in the world. It is the most visited tourist spot of the country. It is an excellent diving, swimming and snorkeling place. Roatan is a paradise filled with wonderful surprise. You can do a Half-day excursion reef snorkeling for $76.

If you want to visit a place where you can see endangered species, Rio Platano Biosphere Reserve, is beautiful protected area. The site is perfect for hiking, with trails that are also enjoyable things to do. And there are great waterfalls the you’ll definitely enjoy.

There is no entrance fee to the park but you have to pay for the transportation that you will use in order to reach the park. You can also reach Punta Izopo Wildlife Refuge from Tela and pay $38 to explore and spot local wildlife while kayaking.

Local transportation in Honduras

You can choose from many local transportations in the country. You can ride the bus for short trips in the city for as low as $1-2 per hour. And for express buses you should buy ticket in advance when possible to avoid being stranded. You can rent a car for $45 for the whole day. And taxi’s can cost you $2-3 for a short trip. Also you can try hitchhiking in the city.

A budget of $30-45 may be your minimum budget in Honduras for a day. A $15-20 dollar for your accommodation. And $5-10 for your food and the rest remaining is for transportation and entrance fees for tourist spots. This budget may vary depending on how much luxurious your travel would be.
