WHERE TO STAY IN SEVILLE

There are many different places to stay in Seville. The neighborhoods of Santa Cruz and Triana are located near the city center. Another great place to stay is in La Macarena, especially if you want to enjoy the nightlife in Seville. Though it is farther from the city center than the other neighborhoods, it’s still an amazing place to inhabit during your visit.

You can find cheap hostels starting at 10-15 EUR for a dorm. This rate applies to most dorms in the city center. There are also luxury hotels and mid-budget accommodations around the places to stay in Seville mentioned above.

How to get to Seville

By plane

There are plenty of flights, both local and international, that land in Seville. Like going to Madrid you can easily get to Seville by booking a flight online. You can check Skycanner to make sure you get the best possible rate. The airport is located 25 kilometers from the city center. Buses to or from the airport cost 4 to 6 EUR for a return ticket while taxis cost around 25 EUR. The trip usually lasts around 30 minutes.

By train

Going to the province through the AVE, a high-speed train in Spain, takes 2 hours and a half from Madrid. It means you can even do a day tour from Madrid from Seville if you can find time for it in your schedule. The train is very comfortable and efficient. The fare is around 70 EUR one way and the station is located in the Eastern part of Seville.

By bus

I chose to go to Seville using the bus. It cost me 23 EUR at the time and the trip took 6 hours and a half with Socibus. Buses from Madrid leave from Bus Station Mendez Alvaro and arrive in Plaza de Armas. This is the cheapest option for those traveling in a budget. There are buses throughout the day that take you to the heart of Seville.

Things to do in Seville and Places to Visit in Seville

Though Spain is a large territory to cover on a tour, Seville is definitely one of the most touristic cities in the country. You shouldn’t miss out on its rich history and the many things to do in Seville. Let me talk about my favorites things to do in Seville and the many places to visit in Seville. 

1. La Giralda

La Giralda can be found alongside the cathedral and it’s one of the most popular places to visit in Seville. It’s original purpose was to be a minaret (or lighthouse) for the Great Mosque of Seville during the 12th century but now it serves as a bell tower for the province’s cathedral.

La Giralda has been declared a UNESCO World Heritage Site on 1987, along with the Alcazar and the General Archive of the Indies. It stands over 100 meters high and used to be the tallest building in Seville until Sevilla Tower was built a few years ago. You can go up La Giralda entrance fee is 9 EUR. 

Travel Tip: Try visiting on a Monday afternoon. The entrance is free!

2. Seville Cathedral

Seville Cathedral is the largest Gothic Church in the world and is actually named Catedral de Santa María de la Sede (Cathedral of Saint Mary of the See). It was completed in the 16th century after being converted from a mosque. Sevilla Cathedral entrance fee is 9 EUR per person and you can access to the bell tower. You can’t skip in the list of places to visit in Seville.

3. The Alcazar of Seville

This beautiful site is the oldest Royal Palace that is currently in use in Europe and is one of the most amazing places in Seville. It is a flamboyantly designed palace and is a great example of Mudejar architecture. The Alcazar of Seville entrance fee is 11 EUR and can be visited for free on Mondays, from 6 to 7 PM.

4. Torre Del Oro (Tower of Gold)

Aside from its stunning beauty, the Torro del Oro actually serves a higher purpose. It is a military watchtower that protects Seville by controlling access to the Guadalquivir River.

It’s great to come up the tower and visit as a tourist, though. You can do so during the morning and afternoon. Torre del Oro entrance fee is 3 EUR. Mondays are free in this site as well! With that extra 3 EUR, you can enjoy some beer or wine and tapas instead! My favorite place to watch the sunset in Seville would have to be next to the Guadalquivir River.

5. Guadalquivir River

As I have mentioned around Guadalquivil River breathtaking sunsets are guaranteed in this iconic river in Seville. However, the view isn’t the only great thing about it. It is actually one of the longest rivers in the Iberian Peninsula.

You can take a cruise around Guadalquivir River or just walk around the streets next to it. There’s even a bicycle lane for those who want to go around the river in two wheels.

6. Maria Luisa Park

A popular public park in Seville, Maria Luisa Park is a green area. It is enticingly beautiful and perfect for taking a walk or riding a bicycle. As this park belongs to the public, there is no entrance fee to access it. From here you can go to Plaza España, and there is also a botanical garden inside this park. You can rent a four-wheeled bike at Maria Luisa Park.

It’s one of the most popular things to do in Seville, especially for foreigners. It’s a fun experience and a great way to explore the park while being protected from the sun!

7. Plaza España

This palace is found inside Maria Luisa and can even be toured with a small boat. Many tourists love visiting this area and locals enjoy unwinding here, as well. Plaza España was one of my favorite places to visit in Seville.

8. Go to Archive of the Indies

The famous landmark named Archivo General de las Indias is a prime example of Spanish Renaissance architecture and was designed by Juan Herrera. Along with La Giralda and other historic places in Seville, the Archive of the Indies was registered in 1987 as UNESCO World Heritage Site.

Here, you will see the diary of Christopher Colombus and building plans of colonized cities in South America. There is no entrance fee, you just need to wait in line a while to access the amazing archives.

9. Try Tapas in Seville

Tapas hopping will definitely be one your favorite things to do in Seville. There are many bars in the city and an entire area where you can go for tapas. My favorite spot to eat tapas in was Alameda de Hercules. It’s perfect for taking a break after visiting landmarks.

Prices for tapas with a beer go around 3 to 4 EUR in Seville. Spanish omelette, octopus, Jamon Iberico, and cheese were my favorite tapas in Seville.

10. Flamenco Show

Flamenco is the most popular dance in Seville and comes from gypsy and Moorish culture. If you have never seen a Flamenco show, Seville is the best place to catch one. There are different places that offer the show all over Seville.

You can see the dance performances with a drink or even while having dinner. Flamenco shows are quite pricey because of how good they are, so make sure you find a place with a good offer!

11. Go to Metropol Parasol

Known to Sevillanos as Las Setas or The Mushroom, this is actually the world’s biggest wooden structure. The mushroom-like structure was designed by the amazing artist and architect Jürgen Mayer from Germany and is sitting on a site that is 18,000 square meter wide. It’s a sight to behold both over, under and inside it. Metropol Parasol entrance fee is 3 EUR. The structure has several levels for you to explore and enjoy.

12. Visit Huevo de Colon

Huevo de Colon is located in  Parque de San Jerónimo, this landmark is the largest bronze sculpture in all of Seville and is said to be dedicated to Christopher Colombus. The park is just a few kilometers away from the city center and is a great place to visit while riding a bicycle. You can then continue your ride all the way to Alamillo Park.

13. Spending the day at Alamillo Park

This park is the largest one in the city and is located in Seville’s Cartuja area. Alamillo Park is a really nice space to take in nature while walking or riding a bicycle. It is located just a few kilometers outside of city center and makes Seville an even greener and lovelier place. There are many rest and play areas in Alamillo Park.

14. Go to Isla Magica

This theme park is perfect if you are traveling with kids. As its name implies, it is a magical place that even adults will enjoy too. Unlike famous theme parks in other countries, Isla Magica is located very near the city so going here won’t be any hassle and can be easily added to your itinerary.

Fees are quite pricey as tickets for adults cost 32 EUR while those for children are 21 EUR. It will all be worth it once you get in and spend the entire day here! Tickets go higher to 41 EUR and 30 EUR if you also want to explore Aqua Magica.

15. Visit the Maestranza

Plaza de toros de la Real Maestranza de Caballería de Sevilla is one of the oldest bullrings in Spain. Called Maestranza for short, it has the capacity of 12,000 seats for all its events. This is the perfect spot to be at during the Seville Fair as this is where the best bullfights in Seville are held.

The months from April to September make up the prime season and tickets for each show cost 30 to 180 EUR. Though bullfighting is such a controversial subject for many tourists, it cannot be denied how important Maestranza is to Sevillanos.

16. Go to Barrio Santa Cruz

Barrio Santa Cruz is one of the most famous neighborhoods in Seville among tourists. There are many churches in Barrio Santa Cruz and it is located near the Cathedral of Seville and the Giralda. Here you can go to tapas bars and museums or just wander around the beautiful streets.

17. Visit Triana

The neighborhood of Triana is another popular of the places to visit in Seville, and can be seen in the west bank of the Guadalquivir River. It’s a great place to learn more about the Flamenco culture. There are also ceramics shops if you want to buy souvenirs from Seville. The nightlife in Triana is also thriving and attracts many tourists.

18. Visit museums

There are many museums to visit in Seville. Museo del Flamenco is where you can learn all about flamenco dances, costumes and the entire culture. Flamenco, after all, is such a huge part of Seville’s history. The entrance fee is for the museum is 10 EUR and 26 EUR for touring the museum and watching a show.

Another great one museum is Museo Bellas Artes. Here, you will find Spanish art from the Medieval to the 21st Century. You can get in for 1.5 EUR and or even for free if you are a student in one of the European Union nations. Cool, right?

19. Check out local markets

There are many popular local markets in Seville, and one we can recommend is the Mercado of Triana. They sell plenty of beautiful local products here. If you would like to do some shopping, the perfect time to visit would before lunch.

This gives you plenty of time to choose your purchases wisely and to take photos as well. You can get a beer or wine and tapas that are local to Seville. There are many other fabulous markets in Seville and you can always ask locals for their recommendations.

20. Rent a bicycle

There are several places where you can rent a bicycle in Seville. The city is perfect for cycling since there are bicycle lanes everywhere and the city’s streets are level.

If you explore the city by bicycle, you can reach Alamillo, San Jeronimo Park, the city center and Maria Luisa Park in one morning. Cycling in the city is also a great way to feel less like a tourist and more like a local. You are in for a treat!

21. Nightlife in Seville

The most popular place for all things nightlife in Seville is Calle Betis in Triana. There are all sorts of pubs and bars in Calle Betis. Add this with the spectacular views of the Guadalquivir River and you’ve got yourself a spectacular night. In fact, the nightlife in Seville is actually one of the most popular in Spain. Parties in Seville usually start out late at night, right around midnight!

22. Have Breakfast in Seville

There are two different popular breakfast options in Seville. You can get them both in small cafes and eateries all over the province. In winter, the most sought after breakfast would have to be chocolate and churros, a world-famous fried dough pastry. The chocolate serves as its luscious dip and just makes the churros a heavenly delight. Don’t forget to pair it with some nice, warm hot chocolate or coffee as well. This meal is quite affordable; you can have it for around 2 to 3 EUR.

On the other hand, the most popular dish in the summer is ham toast. The scrumptious dish is made with mashed tomato, garlic, and olive oil, with Jamon Iberico or Spanish ham. This simple meal is one of the most delicious ones you’ll ever have in Seville. It is such a humble food that can be bought for 3 to 4 EUR.

Festivals in Seville

Holy Week (Semana Santa)

Holy Week in Seville and other Spanish speaking countries is known as Semana Santa. There are processions of beautiful floats carrying religious statues decorated with flowers during this week. It’s actually one of the biggest festivals in Seville. Holy Week gets crowded and if you are planning to come, make sure to book your place to stay in Seville in advance.

Seville Fair (Feria de Abril)

This fair is celebrated two weeks after Semana Santa in Seville. From Monday to Sunday, each day starts with a parade of carriages. There are even bullfights everyday. During this celebration, little tents or pavilions called casetas are placed on the streets. Casetas are where prominent people in Seville host their private parties during the fair.

If you’re lucky enough to have a friend who lives in Seville that has a caseta, try to get an invite if you can! Wearing flamenco costumes, drinking rebujito and eating tapas also guarantees a great time.

El Rocio Pilgrimage

This pilgrimage in Seville is done in honor of the Virgin of El Rocio and is held during the second day of the Pentecost. You can start the pilgrimage from Iglesia el Salvador in Plaza del Salvador. The pilgrimage began centuries ago, beginning in 1653. This is another mosque that has been turned into a church and is a testament to the richness of Seville’s history.
