Things to do in New Zealand

Test your fears in the Sky Tower

The Sky Tower in Auckland is the tallest building in the Southern Hemisphere, stretching to a whopping 300+ metres high. Built-in 1997, the Sky Tower is used for telecommunications and observation, however, it also attracts thousands of tourists every year.

The panoramic birds-eye views from above the clouds are already an extraordinary sight. If you are looking to test your fears even further, though, the Sky Tower also offers skywalk and skyjump activities from the top of the tower.

Get immersed in the Māori culture

If you do any research at all before you get to New Zealand, you will already know that the indigenous Māori traditions are an important part of the local culture.

New Zealand is full of opportunities to immerse yourself into the Māori culture – you may visit museums and learn more about the history and traditions as well as engage with them yourself in local events. Try your hand at the traditional dances and arts, taste the authentic cuisine, learn a bit of the Māori language and enjoy the unique performances.

Go whale watching

New Zealand is home to a wide range of sea life, including exotic fishes, turtles, dolphins and even whales. There are certain parts of the country, such as Waiheke Island, that are great locations to watch the amazing wildlife in its natural habitat.

Not only that, you may also get adventurous with some water sports, such as kayaking, sailing and snorkelling. After a day full of adventures, enjoy a locally-produced glass of wine in front of the spectacular views.

Witness the wonders of Waitomo Caves

A truly extraordinary sight that can rarely be found outside of New Zealand, the Waitomo Caves are a natural wonder. Dating back around 30 million years, the Waitomo Caves are not only filled with unique rock formations, but are also home to hundreds of thousands of glowworms illuminating the pitch black space and creating an almost cosmic-like experience. Getting a boat tour through the Waitomo Caves will allow you to learn more about the science of this unique phenomenon too.

Another unique and mind-blowing experience in New Zealand is the active geothermal areas that the country is home to. The two most popular places are Taupo and Rotorua, where you can witness the earth coming alive.

Get amazed by erupting geysers, bubbling mud pools, hot mineral springs and volcanic craters. You will be able to witness these natural wonders for yourself while getting active in different water sports activities as well as soaking in one of the hot springs.

Visit the Lord of the Ring set

As many already know, the whole of the Lord of the Ring film trilogy was filmed in New Zealand – not surprising, given the magical, picturesque nature of the country. Whether you are a fan of the world-famous trilogy or not, strolling around the village of Hobbiton in Matamata where the films were shot is an incredibly unique experience. Not only will it feel like entering a whole new world of fantasy but the lush farms around the village are a stunning place for a day out.
