Nusa Penida Travel Guide – How to get to Nusa Penida

The easiest route to take when traveling to Nusa Penida is going to Sanur in Bali. Well, Sanur isn’t one of the most popular places to stay in Bali. If you choose to go to Sanur, you can reach it through Go Jek, Grab and Uber. If you will stay in Canggu, Kuta or Ubud for example, it will take you around one hour or more (depending on the traffic) to reach Sanur. Once in Sanur you can take a fast boat to Nusa Penida. The ride cost us 350k IND Rupiah ($25 USD) to go both ways. It is much cheaper to buy a two-way ticker since we’ll obviously head back to Bali anyway. You can try to find some boats with cheaper prices but we noticed that all companies pretty much offer the same prices. We went to Nusa Penida at around 12 PM. There were boats leaving as early as 10 AM and there are trips until 4 PM every two hours or so. When leaving Nusa Penida, they have a similar schedule though we chose to leave the island at 7 AM to get to Sanur early in the morning. It’s always best to catch the first ferry out if you’ll only be going on a day trip to Nusa Penida so you can make the most out of your stay. The boat ride from Sanur only lasts for 30-40 minutes and the trip was really nice especially when you pass by Nusa Lembongan, another great destination in Bali, as you get closer to Nusa Penida. If you are traveling on a budget, we recommend you join the local ferry from Padang Bai for 40k IND Rupiah($3 USD). We took the ferry for the first time and the ride from there was just an hour and a half. You’ll also find cheaper accommodations in this area where the ferries are, and there’s much cheaper food and even cheaper rates for renting a motorbike here. There are also boats coming from Nusa Lembongan if you decide to go there before Nusa Penida. You can ride a private boat early in the morning and go back at sunset. If you don’t have much time to visit Nusa Penida, this could be the best option for you. You can rent a motorbike or a car and you can just visit the main attractions in Nusa Penida: the Northern part where you can visit Kelingking Viewpoint, Angel’s Billabong, Broken Beach and even Crystal Bay. If you have more time to spend, you can choose to go South and spend an amazing day in Atuh Beach. If you are staying in Nusa Lembongan or planning to visit, make sure that you read our blog post of things to do in Nusa Lembongan. You can enjoy snorkeling, going on a mangrove tour and visiting our favorite place in Nusa Lembongan: Devil’s Beach. Nusa Penida Day Trip

Nusa Penida is a large island but yes, you can opt for a Nusa Penida day trip if you have a very tight schedule. However, we recommend spending 3-4 nights in Nusa Penida to make sure you can visit all the main places and enjoy without being in a rush. Almost all the attractions in Nusa Penida are free to visit. Transportation Around Nusa Penida

Get a motorbike or rent a car? How do you move around Nusa Penida?

We actually tried both for our Nusa Penida tour. We rented a motorbike for a cheap price and we also did a private tour with a car. If you rent a motorbike, the rate ranges from 70k-80k ($5-6 USD) per day. If you’re lucky enough, you can get one with a full tank, depending on how the last person gave back the motorbike. If you came from Bali, you’ll notice how prices are actually a little bit higher in the Nusa Islands. In our first trip, we got our motorbike for 50k per day but the last time we tried renting, prices were no longer lower than 70K. Still, it was pretty cheap but just a little more expensive compared to the rates in Canggu and Ubud where you can get a motorbike for 40K-50K per day. If you are heading to Broken Beach, Angel’s Billabong and Kelingking point, you should have good enough skills in driving a motorbike since the road condition is really bad. It has improved since our first visit but it’s still hard to drive if you don’t have enough experience on a motorbike. Here is our recommendation for your itinerary if you plan on renting a motorbike on your trip to Nusa Penida. If you are going to Atuh Beach, we recommend spending the whole day there. Then you can stay for another day if you are also planning to visit Kelingking, Broken Beach, Angel’s Billabong and Crystal Bay. By car, there are private tours that range from 600k-750K ($40-50 USD), depending on your negotiation skills. Having a private tour is actually more comfortable and convenient if you are interested in taking lots of pictures like us. It’s a great option since you won’t have to worry about the bad road condition. We did a private tour in Nusa Penida and everything went great and smooth! We got to visit Angel’s Billabong, Broken Beach, Kelingking, Paluang Cliff and Crystal Bay. We did not only have a driver but also a guide that gives awesome tips on where to take the best pictures in the island. This tour is  also perfect for those who don’t have a lot of time to explore the island on their own.

Budget travel in Nusa Penida

As we mentioned above, renting a motorbike costs 70k-80K with the possibility of a full tank which will make you save at least 10k in petrol. Renting a private car will cost you 600k-750K  for a day which isn’t expensive especially if you have 3 or 4 people on the tour with you. There are also vans at the port that will which charge around $20 USD for a day trip. For accommodations close to the port, prices start at 200k ($15 USD) for a private room with a bathroom and internet connection. You can even get a discount if you decide to stay for a few days. How much is the food in Nusa Penida? Well, if you go for local food you can eat for 15k-20K ($1-1.5 USD). For that price, you can already try Nasi Campur, Bakso, Soto or Nasi Goreng. There are juice drinks for $1 USD and Indonesian coffee which we loved only for 50 US cents. If you want to eat Western food once in a while, you will have to pay $3-4 USD, and you will pay just as much for beer and other spirits.

Accommodation budget travel in Nusa Penida

If you are coming from Sanur, we recommend you to stay near the port. There are a few options in Nusa Penida for accommodations from guesthouses and inns to nice hotels and resorts. Room rates start at 200k IND Rupiah ($15 USD) for a private room with bathroom. You can get a modest room for this price and comes with pretty good internet connection. Sure, there’s internet signal, but don’t expect high speeds when in Nusa Penida. The first time we visited Nusa Penida a year ago, we stayed near the local port coming from Padang Bai and prices were much cheaper then. We found a room for only 150k IND Rupiah. We highly recommend staying near the port since it’s very convenient to travel from here. There aren’t a lot of places to sleep in Nusa Penida so it’d be better if you can book in advance. If you want to try AirBnB, it’s also available in Nusa Penida. 1. Atuh Beach

Atuh Beach is actually quite far from the port. You’ll spend more than an hour riding the motorbike to reach the beach, yet we highly recommend this destination. It’s an easy ride by a motorbike, the road and the directions are easy to follow so it’s very accessible. Once you’re there, you will reach an intersection. If you go left, the road will be easier and they won’t charge you an entrance fee for parking your motorbike in Atuh Beach. If you choose the right side you will be closer to the famous Instagram-able attraction in Atuh Beach, the Tree House. Atuh Beach is very quiet which makes it perfect for those who are trying to avoid the noise from the large crowds in other destinations. There are restaurants if you want to eat and have a beer or some fresh coconut juice to battle the heat. Pool chairs are also available if you decide to spend the day in Atuh Beach. After parking your motorbike, you will spend 10 minutes going down to reach the beach. The view is really amazing once you reach the shore — white sand, crystal blue water, and rock formations all around! It’s perfect for unwinding and also for taking amazing pictures to share with your friends, family and your Instagram feed!

2. Peguyangan Waterfall

You might be familiar with the Blue Stairs in Nusa Penida that’s really famous on Instagram. At the Peguyangan Waterfall, you can enjoy amazing cliff views while hiking down. On your way down the stairs, if you are lucky, you might even spot some Manta Rays swimming in the waters. The hike will take you around 20 minutes and the view here is just awesome.

3. Kelingking View Point

Our favorite place in Nusa Penida is the Kelingking Point. Even though we’ve been here before, we still came back on this trip just to see the gorgeous view from this attraction. To get there, it takes more than an hour from the port. The road condition is gets a bit rough as you get closer to Kelingking Point. If you want to go down to the beach from Kelingking Viewpoint, it will take around 40-50 minutes since it’s pretty challenging to do so. The view is amazing and you will love taking pictures around the area. We were so lucky, we were able to spot 30-40 Manta Rays during one of the days that we visited Kelingking Point. If you check Google Maps, you’ll find that there are two roads to get there. The longer road is smoother and has better conditions than the shorter one. Once you reach Kelingking, you will be asked to pay a 10k IND Rupiah parking fee for your motorbike. There are a few places for eating or drinking near the parking area. The area has gotten so crowded over the years as tourists flock the area, but you can’t miss visiting this place while in Nusa Penida.

4. Kelingking East Viewpoint

This is a secret spot in Kelingking for those who love taking pictures and flying drones. From here, you can see the beach all the way down. The climb is very steep if you’re planning to go down to the shore, so be very careful. If you go 5 minutes to the East from the original viewpoint, you will hardly find any people taking pictures there. We discovered this viewpoint thanks to our guide in the private tour car we rented. We took the nice picture above there.

5. Paluang Cliff

This cliff is very close to Kelingking and will only take a couple of minutes ride by motorbike or car. Again, if you are lucky, you might spot Manta Rays from this viewpoint. If not, at least you will get the chance to enjoy another view without many tourists. In Paluang Cliff, you don’t have to wait in a long line to take pictures since most of the tourists do not bother to go here.

More Things to do in Nusa Penida Island

6. Nusa Penida Treehouse (Rumah Pohon)

The Tree House was one of Rachel’s must-see places in Nusa Penida, but sadly we didn’t make it there on this particular trip. We took the other road going straight to Atuh Beach instead. When you see Atuh Beach signs on the road, just keep going right and ask around for the Tree House. You can even rent the place for a night with AirBnB.

7. Manta Rays

There are a few spots where you can dive with Manta Rays. The main one is in Angel’s Billabong and there are a few other places to do it, like Blue Stairs. We were lucky we were able to spot them from Kelingking Viewpoint, though we were told not to go down at that part of the beach since it was on the left side; we were only allowed to go down on the right side.

8. Crystal Bay

Crystal Bay was our last stop on our day tour around Nusa Penida. It’s the perfect place if you want to relax and go for a swim. The bay is very accessible with a motorbike. We recommend this as your last stop for the day, too. In our opinion, it’s not as beautiful as Angel’s Billabong, Broken Beach, and Kelingking Point. If your schedule is tight, the other places would be a priority, for sure. But if you can spend a few days in Nusa Penida, you can explore this pace along with those other attractions.

9. Angel’s Billabong

It’s really hard to go here by a motorbike. You really need excellent driving skills otherwise you will have a difficult time. reaching this spot. Once you get to Angel’s Billabong, don’t be surprised if the place is quite crowded with tourists since this is a really popular attraction. But it is still totally worth the visit. If you are going by motorbike or car, you will also need to pay for parking. Once you see the view, though, you will totally forget about the small fee and just enjoy the lovely view. The first part is where you can spot Manta Rays coasting the ocean and you will see boats conducting snorkeling activities as well. And if you walk for a few more meters, you will see the main attraction where it’s really great to take pictures. It’s so beautiful especially if there are only a few people in the area. If not, be patient in trying to get a nice shot. Just relax, take a dip and don’t mind all the other tourists. Enjoy the place even without a photo and you’ll be just fine.

10.Broken Beach

Broken Beach is a beautiful natural formation on the coast of Nusa Penida. It’s just a few minutes walking distance from Angel’s Billabong. The view here was insane! We enjoyed taking pictures, flying the drone and walking around. Unfortunately, you can’t go down and go for a swim because it’s quite high and there’s no access point to the water. You will see an archway at Broken Beach that has been formed many, many years ago. It’s a great spot if you love walking and enjoying the vastness of the ocean. If you go to Nusa Penida, try to bring a small backpack, so you can carry your necessities in case you decide to sleep near the places that you will visit. You can just rent a motorbike in the port and go around if you don’t have much time for visiting Nusa Penida.

11. Sunsets in Nusa Penida

Finally, Nusa Penida is full of beautiful sunset landscapes. This one was shot at the port, where kids are playing and there’s a gorgeous view of the light house here, as well. Watching locals play, while seeing a spectacular sunset, gave us such beautiful, refreshing and overwhelming joy!

Nusa Penida Travel Guide: Itineraries to do in Nusa Penida

We recommend these itineraries for your visit in our Nusa Penida Travel Guide:

1st Day Itinerary in Nusa Penida: Kelingking View Point

If you reach Nusa Penida early in the morning, start your day right by going to Nusa Penida’s main attractions. Just rent a motorbike and go to Kelingking Beach, it will take you around one hour to reach this spectacular spot. If you only plan on visiting Kelingking, then you will have plenty of time to take pictures, hike down and enjoy the beach. You can also move around East Kelingking Viewpoint and Paluang Cliff. Once you get to these different viewpoints and see the view, you will most likely spend your day here. You might also spot some Manta Rays from the view at the top.

2nd Day Itinerary in Nusa Penida: Broken Beach, Angel’s Billabong and Crystal Bay

The first thing you have to remember is to drive carefully if you will rent a motorbike. Take your time to reach this point since the road isn’t in the best conditions. If you don’t feel confident riding a motorbike, just rent a private car and you won’t worry about reaching your destination. Also, take note that a few minutes before reaching Angel’s Billabong there is no road and there are few meters where you will only find rocky terrain. If you want to enjoy Angel’s Billabong and Broken Beach without the huge crowds, try to wake up super early in the morning and you will experience the beach with almost no people around since most tourists only go there after they’ve had their breakfast. Take your time and hike around the place so you don’t miss anything around the area. Once you are done with the main points in Angel’s Billabong and Broken Beach just head down to Crystal Bay to relax at the end of your day. The road to Crystal Bay has a much better condition and it’s very easy to access. Have a swim, relax, drink a coconut and wait for the sun to set!

3rd Day Itinerary in Nusa Penida: Atuh Beach

You can go to Atuh Beach, a destination both Rachel and I really loved! On the way to Atuh Beach, you can pass by the fisherman village where you can rest, take a few pictures, have breakfast or drink a coconut. Once you are in Atuh Beach, you have two options: Option 1: Going to the left side is the easiest way. Park your motorbike and go down to the beach, it is just a 10-minute hike. You will have the chance to rent a pool chair and spend your day at the beach. You can also hike around to enjoy more view. Option 2: If you choose the right side, go to the famous Tree House and find an amazing place to stay in the middle of nowhere. Take some awesome pictures for your Instagram feed and hike around going to Atuh Beach. You can stay until sunset and you won’t have to worry about the road, it’s manageable on your way back. You won’t encounter any problems, just drive safe because there’s no available road light in the area.

4th Day Itinerary in Nusa Penida: Dive with Manta Rays and Visit Peguyangan Waterfalls

You can go snorkeling with the Manta Rays early in the morning and you can try to visit Peguyangan Waterfalls. If you wake up early and have more time, try visiting your favorite place in Nusa Penida again just like we did. We loved Kelingking Viewpoint so much, we visited the place twice. If you liked Angel’s Billabong and Broken Beach more, go for it! If you travel light with a backpack you can easily change accommodations in Nusa Penida. It will also save you a lot of time the next day. Plus, you will be able to know the place better and you can choose to stay in your favorite part of Nusa Penida Island.
