There are daily buses and trains going to Avignon from main of the places around. I went during my road trip from Montpellier to Avignon and Nimes is 1 hour driving. If you want to drive from North Spain will be around 4-5 hours driving depending where you are coming from.

BEST TIME TO VISIT AVIGNON

Avignon is a city with a Mediterranean climate so summer is its high season among tourists. Autumn would be the perfect time to enjoy this French city.

While the weather during fall is still warm and dry, temperatures and room rates have dropped considerably compared to the peak season. So, the best time to visit Avignon is actually from September to November.

DAILY BUDGET TRAVEL IN AVIGNON

There are many ways to explore Avignon. You can go walking around Avignon or getting public transportation for around 2€ a single bus ticket. You can go by bicycle too.

There are meals in Avignon at local restaurants for as low as €10-15. Those who want to eat something a bit fancier can have a meal at a mid-range restaurant for around €20-40 or even less if you have someone to split the bill with. Dinner at a top restaurant in Avignon can go for €70-150.

Palais des Papes is one of the largest medieval Gothic buildings in Europe. It’s a fortress and palace was the residence of Western Christianity during the 14th century. Palais des Papes entrance fee is 12€ and 14.50€ with entrance to the bridge for adults. Children under 8 years old are free of charge.

2. Pont Saint Bénézet

Pont Saint-Bénézet is also known as the Pont d’Avignon. Pont Saint-Bénézet a medieval site inside the the Palais des Papes and it’s considered with the Palais des Papes and Cathédrale Notre-Dame des Doms were classified as a World Heritage Site.

Pont Saint-Bénézet entrance fee is 5€ and 14.50€ a combine ticket with the palace for adults and children under 8 years old are free of charge.

Musée Calvet is the main one in Avignon with the fine arts housed in an 18th-century in the former chapel of the city’s Jesuit college including include goldwork, faience, porcelain as decorative arts. Musée Calvet is run by the Fondation Calvet. Musée Calvet has no entrance fee just by donation.

9. Musée du Petit Palais

Musée du Petit Palais is a museum and art gallery opened in 1976. Musée du Petit Palais has a collection of Renaissance paintings of the Avignon school as well as from Italy. Musée du Petit Palais has no entrance fee.

10. Collection Lambert

Collection Lambert is a contemporary art museum that includes over 550 works by Yvonne Lamber. Collection Lambert entrance fee is 10€ for adults and free for children of 5 years old. Collection Lambert opening hours from Tuesdays to Sundays 11am to 6pm and July-August daily 11am to 7pm.

11. Rocher des Doms

Rocher des Doms is located on the left bank of the Rhône. Rocher des Doms serves is covered with a public garden called Jardin des Doms. Rocher des Doms is one of the Avignon tourist spots that you can’t miss it.

Peruse Les Halles Market is always a great start point for knowing about local food and must dish to try in Avignon. There are a few places to buy fruits, vegetables and even to have coffee or a drink.

15. PONT DU GARD

Pont du Gard is an ancient Roman aqueduct built in the first century AD to carry water to the Roman colony of Nemausus in Nimes. Pont du Gard is the highest of all Roman aqueduct and it’s very well preserved. Obviously is an UNESCO site since 1985. One of the best things to do in Avignon just a few minutes driving.

16. MONTPELLIER

Montpellier is one hour driving from Avignon. You will have an amazing time exploring city center and if you like trying local restaurants. It will be nice if you can spend a couple of days visiting Montpellier.

18. SAINT LAURENT DES ARBRES
