10 Most Instagrammable Places in Algarve – Algarve’s diversity is not only seen in nature but in its culture and history as well. There are many historic villages and castle towns to explore here. We took a trip to the area to see the magic of Algarve for ourselves.

The Algarve, Portugal’s southernmost region, is known for its Atlantic beaches and golf resorts. Whitewashed fishing villages on low cliffs overlooking sandy coves were transformed in the 1960s. They are now a favorite tourist destination from people all over the world. In fact, the region received up to 7.1 million tourists in 2017!

Where to Stay in Algarve

How to get to Algarve

By Plane

You can book a flight to Algarve where you’ll land in Faro Airport. You can use airlines like TAP Portugal, Wizz Air and EasyJet when going to Faro.  You can then reach the bus and train terminal from the airport on a taxi if you wish to explore Algarve beyond the municipality of Faro.

For those coming from New York, you can get a ticket to Faro for as low as $250 USD. Those in London, you can get on a 3-hour flight to Algarve for less than £40 GBP. 1. Praia dos Tres Irmaos

This is our favorite beach in Algarve and it’s located just a few kilometers from Lagos. The picture is from the top and you can go down to access to the beaches under the caves. The sunset along with the low tide was so beautiful and if you go to the far end of the beach, you will enjoy tranquility and even more space. The water is a clear blue, and if you go up the cliff, the views are really breathtaking. 

How to get to Praia dos Tres Irmaos? You have to drive until Portimao and going down to the Praias. It’s close to Praia da Rocha and Praia do Alemao.

2. Praia da Marinha

Praia da Marinha is one of the most emblematic and beautiful beaches of Portugal, located on the Atlantic coast in Caramujeira, Lagoa Municipality, Algarve. It is considered by the Michelin Guide as one of the 10 most beautiful beaches in Europe and as one of the 100 most beautiful beaches in the world.

You’ve probably saw a picture of it once or twice before in magazines and you might be wondering where it was. It charms the tourists with its crystal clear waters and the archetypal limestone cliffs. You’ll also surely love the view of the clear sky when the sun goes down.

How to get to Praia da Marinha? Despite its fame and beauty, Praia da Marinha isn’t that crowded as much as other attractions and scenic places around Algarve due to the fact that it isn’t really that accessible. For the easiest way, you can take a private vehicle or a taxi to directly take you there. From Albufeira to Lagos, a taxi ride can sot $30 to $40 USD.

Make sure to arrange a pic-up time so you can go back to the city after enjoying the view. If you really want to take public transport, consider taking a bus from Lagos or Faro to Lagoa . From there, a bus runs twice a day to and from Praia da Marinha on weekdays, once in the morning, and once in the afternoon. It doesn’t run on weekends.

3. Praia Do Ana

Praia do Ana is located just a few kilometers far from Ponte du Piedade and a few meters from Praia do Camilo. It’s great place for swimming and it has easy access comparing with Ponte du Piedade and Praia do Camilo where you have to do downstairs.

How to get to Praia do Ana? It’s on the way to Ponte du Piedade if you go by car just before Praia do Camilo. It’s hard to park the car around the beach during weekends and peak season. You can go by bus to Lagos if you decide going by public transportation. 

4. Carvoeiro

Carvoeiro, or more commonly Praia de Carvoeiro, is a town and a former civil parish in the municipality of Lagoa, Algarve, Portugal. It is a picture-perfect destination nestled along a cliff side. With whitewashed buildings, shops, bars and restaurants rise steeply from the small arc of beach and gold and green cliffs, it is a top destination for leisure by the tourists. 

It is a 5 kilometer stretch of  diminutive seaside resorts with a more laid-back approach than any other bigger resorts around the areas. It is actually an Algarve fishing village before it was turned tourist hot spot it is today.

How to get to Carvoeiro? From Faro, you can take a train going to Portimão then ride another bus to Carvoeiro. If you want to take a bus, ride a bus going to Lagoa, ten another bus to Carvoeiro. The most hassle-free way to go to Carvoeiro is to take a taxi. 

5. Praia Olhos de Agua

Praia Olhos de Agua is located in Albufeira is a coastal city in the southern Algarve region of Portugal. It’s also a former fishing village that has become a major holiday destination, with sandy beaches and a busy nightlife strip

The perfect time to visit Olhos de Agua is at sunset since is so colorful and it’s not busy comparing with the other beaches in Algarve.

How to get to Albufeira? You can ride a bus from Faro that will directly take you to Albufeira. You can also take a taxi to take you directly to the place.

6. Algar de Benagil

Benagil is a small Portuguese village on the Atlantic coast in the municipality of Lagoa, Algarve, in Portugal. Up to the late 20th century, the village’s economy was based on ocean fishing. Now it is a tourist area with a widely used beach. 

To be able to reach the cave in Benagil, you have to take a boat or use a kayak as it is risky just to swim going there. It can also get a bit busy with tourist when it is high season. 

How to get to Algar de Benagil? From Faro, you have to take a bus ride going to Lagoa. After you are dropped off, hail a taxi to take you to Benagil then a boat or rent a kayak to take you to Algar de Benagil.

7. Cabo de São Vicente

Cape St. Vincent is a headland in the municipality of Vila do Bispo, in the Algarve, southern Portugal. It is the south westernmost point of Portugal and of mainland Europe. The cape takes its present name from a Spanish priest martyred by the Romans.

It is a good spot for sunset where you’ll see the last rays of the sun hitting the waters around the area. The waters around the cape are also rich in marine wildlife, and there are some good opportunities for birdwatchers here, as well as occasional sightings of sea otters. A red lighthouse houses the small but excellent Museu dos Faróis, showcasing Sagres’ role in Portugal’s maritime history.

How to get to Cabo de São Vicente? Cabo de São Vicente can be reached by public transportation or buses if you’ll be coming from Sagres and Lagos. The service departs from Lagos at 10:30 passes through Sagres at 11:15 and arrives at Cabo de Sao Vicente at 11:25. The return journey leaves at 15:05 gets to Sagres at 15:15 and arrives at Lagos at 16:05. The service operates Monday to Friday. 

8. Praia do Camilo

200 wooden steps down to sheltered, sandy cove divided by ochre-colored rocks with hand-dug tunnel. Praia do Camilo is a veritable suntrap and safe for swimming. With it’s yellowish sandy shore and orange-ish cliffs, Praia do Camilo is surely a sight to behold.

Just like the other shores or beaches around Algarve, Praia do Camilo’s waters boasts of clear blue color and coolness. There’s a restaurant on the cliffs above the beach with spectacular views where you can enjoy seeing the sky and the ocean while eating.

How to get to Praia do Camilo? Praia do Camilo can be reached by local bus and the Lagos tourist train from Lagos town or takes about 40-50 minutes to walk along Avenue dos Descobrimentos past the Parque de Campismo Trindade (camp site). Taxi is another option which will be the most convenient and comfortable one and will cost around 12-15 Euros  for the journey in to Lagos.

9. Ponta da Piedade

Ponta da Piedade is a group of rock formations along the coastline of the town of Lagos, in the Portuguese region of the Algarve. Consisting of yellow-golden cliff-like rocks up to 20 meters high, they are one of the most famous touristic attractions of Portugal. The Ponta da Piedade headland lies around 3 km from Lagos town centre and can be accessed by road, by foot along a cliff-top path or, even better, by boat. 

It offers a stunningly beautiful section of a coastline that already has more than its fair share of natural wonders. The promontory of Ponta de Piedade is a fantasy landscape of caves, grottoes and sea arches that nature has sculpted from the cliffs over thousands of years.

How to get to Ponta de Piedade? There are numerous boats trips available that will take you around the rock pillars, through the natural tunnels and into the grottoes. There are tours available for this if you would be interested. But for adventurous travelers, if you want to stay in-land, you can reach it by car. From the parking lot, you have to go down narrow stairs that will lead you down to a small cove.

10. Praia da Falésia

Falésia Beach is a beach in Albufeira, Algarve, southern Portugal. It has a cliff that begins in the Barranco das Belharucas Beach and extends to Vilamoura. It is actually one of the longest beaches in Portugal, measuring over 3.7 miles (6 kilometers). This beach takes its name from the fascinating gouged red cliffs that form a backdrop to the endless stretch of sand.

The laid-back atmosphere of the town contribute towards making this one of the more peaceful corners of the Algarve, although it is well-served by several top-class golf courses, a smattering of restaurants and bars and a number of accommodation complexes.

How to get to Praia da falésia? You can ride a bus from Faro that will directly take you to Albufeira where it is located. You can also take a taxi to take you directly to the place. 

There are cheap accommodations in Algarve. There are hostels that you can stay at that only costs €18 a night. Of course there are more comfortable places to stay at. You can book at Airbnb for € 26 a night or so.
