How to get to Thulusdhoo Island

If you want to get to Thulusdhoo from Male there are two ways by speed boat faster 30 minutes and $30 USD and more expensive and by public boat cheaper $1.5 USD and 2 hours.

Getting to Thulusdhoo by public boat

There are public boats leaving Villigili ferry terminal in Male every day 2 30 pm except Fridays (remember Fridays is holiday in a Muslim country and public boats aren’t leaving in that day).

The public boat will take 2 hours and it costs 22 Rufiyas per person which is only $1.5 USD. The boat will do a few stops on the way to Thulusdhoo like Huraa, Himaffushi and the final stop will be Dhiffushi Island.

Getting to Thulusdhoo by speedboat

There are speed boats from the airport and from Male going to Thulusdhoo. You can also get a speed boat in the jetty port in Male. The price is $30 USD per person.

There is one ATM in Thulusdhoo if you are planning to stay longer can be useful. Make sure you bring cash enough since there is only one ATM in the island just in case it’s not working.

Internet and Wifi Connection in Thulusdhoo

Wifi connection was working great in Thulusdhoo Island in the guesthouse that we were staying Akiri Surf Retreat. And if you use data 4G was working around the island. So we could catch up with work and we realized how much the internet connection improved in Thulusdhoo since our last visit.

Maldives is Visa-friendly. You will get 30 days free visa when landing in Maldives. You just get a stamp and you’re good to go! Daily Budget Travel in Thulusdhoo

You can get snacks for 2-3 RFY ($1=15.4 RFY). It´s very common for locals have tea with these snacks. You can have rice with fish curry for 25 RFY where they will give you a kind of chips for free, perfect for sharing the food.

Most of the dishes have fish and curry but you can also find chicken here A bottle of water costs 15 RFY while cookies and small snacks go for 5-10 RFY. Foreigners’ meals cost $7-10. It’s mostly just pizza and pasta, though. There is also Chinese food for around $5-6 USD per dish.

If you decide to do activities will cost you $30 USD per person for snorkeling and visiting the sand bank. If you decide to visit a luxury resort in a day trip with activities and lunch included will cost you $100-150 USD per person. How Many Days Should I Spend in Thulusdhoo

We will recommend you at least 3 days in Thulusdhoo if you are planning to relax and doing a day trip. You can stay for a week if you plan to have surf lessons or just surfing for a few days. The first day you will arrive on time for the sunset if you are coming with the public boat.

You can explore the island sunrise and sunsets are amazing! The colors of the ski are totally worth it. Watch out at noon the colors of the water are insane so clear and blue everywhere.

If you are leaving with the public boat you will leave at 7 30 am. So you have to take note 2 nights will be very little time in Thulusdhoo island. Actually would be a day and a half. If you are planning to stay longer and you have budget you can go for day trips for snorkeling, sand banks, fishing or other activities.

Of course surfing and water sports are quite popular in Thulusdhoo island. Prices of the guesthouses are around $40-60 USD depending of the season that you are going to Thulusdhoo but you can find package deals if you stay longer.

Things to do in Thulusdhoo Island

1. Surfing

The most popular of the things to do in Thulusdhoo island is surfing. You can book lessons or rent your board on your own if you know how to surf. There are two main spots Cokes (in Thulusdhoo island near the bridge) for advanced surfers. And Chickens (5 minutes by boat) ideal for beginners and also for advanced surfers.

2. Snorkeling

You can do snorkeling around the reef in Thulusdhoo. However our favorite place was close to the sand bank in Thulusdhoo. It’s 20 minutes speed boat ride and close to Dhiffushi Island. You can see fishes and turtles around. Price of the activity is around $30 USD you can do for free renting your mask in Thulusdhoo.

3. Wakeboarding

I tried by myself and it was so hard! You just put on the boots with the board hold rope and follow the speedboat. It was somuch fun and I lasted just a few seconds, the hardest part is standing up after that everything is easier. It’s better if you practise before baording the boat.

4. Paddling Board

You can rent a paddle board to go around Thulusdhoo Island. There are a few places renting and it’s cool activity to do. You can rent paddle boards for $20 USD for 1-2 hours and $35 USD for the whole day.

5. Day Trip to Dhiffushi Island

The island of Dhiffushi is 30 minutes speed boat ride from Thulusdhoo and you can do a day trip enjoying snorkeling and visiting the sand bank. We totally recommend you to visit the island and spend a few days. You can read our full travel guide to Dhiffushi Island!

6. San Bank day trip

One of the most amazing sand bank that we have ever been. The water was so clear and we were alone with our crew. Flying the drone, taking pictures, swimming and snorkeling. There are day trips from Thulusdhoo and it costs $35 USD.

7. Sunsets

Wherever you go in Maldives sunsets are epic. Our favorite place for the sunset was in the North beach in Thulusdhoo. Just a few locals were going there. And the colors were amazing. We have to say that the beach was little bit dirty. It;s usually bikini beaches are so clean but the other beaches in the islands in Maldives aren’t so clean!

8. Dolphin excursion

One of the most popular things to do in Thulusdhoo Island is dolphin watching at sunset time. The activity costs $35 USD per person and it will take 1-2 hours.

9. Fishing trips

The resorts offer fishing trips during the day and sunset time 1-2 hours and the prices are around $30 USD. You can go on a speed boat. And also they have the option of go for fishing in a traditional dhoni. The best time is at sunset. And if you fish they will cook for you and you will have fresh dinner.

10. Bicycle around the island

There are bicycle for rent or even free from your accommodation. There aren’t big distances in Thulusdhoo. But you can move easily and faster around with the bicycle from the bikini beach to the sunset point. You can visit Coca Cola Company and look for the perfect spots to take pictures in the island.

11. Tour in Coca Cola Company

Yes Thulusdhoo is quite popular because of Coca Cola Company and you will see signs everywhere. There are two daily tours at 9 am and 2 pm. The company is close to the pier.

Thulusdhoo island was the only one with water station where you can refill your water in local islands in Maldives. This was possible thanks to Coca Cola Company.

12. Flying the drone

Nothing better better than flying hte drone in Maldives. The pictures and videos are amazing from the drone. WE enjoyed flying in hte sunsets and around the beaches.

13. Taking pictures all around

There are a few spots for taking pictures around Thulusdhoo island. From hammocks, swings and even beds close to the beach. Just go in the morning since it can be quite busy in the afternoon.

14. Floating Bar Boat Thulusdhoo

A boat bar in Thulusdhoo? Yes even alcohol it’s not allowed in Maldives because of Muslim religion. It’s only forbidden inside Thulusdhoo island in the surface. You can get a boat to visit the bar boat in Thulusdhoo where they serve alcohol Prices of the boat its $10 USD return.

15. Visit Bikini Beach

There is only one bikini beach in the island. It means you are supposed only to swim in that one with your swimming suit. But nowdays the island is growing bigger of tourists and locals aren’t worried so much. But good to know where is the bikini beach is always great to respect them.

16. Walking Around Thulusdhoo Island

Thulusdhoo isn’t very big but it’s nice to walk around. You can see the soccer field always busy, Coca Cola Company and even street art to take a few pictures. Meeting locals and enjoy how quiet is the island outside the beaches.

17. Diving

You can get your Open Water Course if you spend a few days in Thulusdhoo. It’s a great place for diving Maldives. Also there are diving trips around the islands where you can enjoy! Prices for 2 tanks dive is around $150 USD.

18. Day Trip to a Luxury Resort

There are tours going to luxury resorts and prices are going from $100-150 USD per person depending how many people are joining with lunch included, snorkeling and visiting sand banks.

Where to Stay in Thulusdhoo Island

Akiri Surf Retreat was our choice in Thulusdhoo Island. And we can totally recommend this place for you. Firu the owner treated us amazing! From welcoming us from the public boat to our last minute in the island, showing us around and recommending day tours to do.

They offer local and Western breakfast. For us it was the first time having a local breakfast in Maldives mashuni with roshi. It’s made of coconut, tuna, onions, pumpkin and you eat with roti. And the coffe was great!

Where to eat in Thulusdhoo Island

There are a few options in the island from local to Western food.

Local places expect to pay $3-4 USD for chicken fried rice or nasi goreng. The typical snacks that they serve in local restaurants in Maldives are so cheap. And you can get 4-5 of them for $1 USD. A dinner for two people $8-10 USD.

Thulusdhoo and Canopus Retreat are good options if you are looking for Western food. Prices are around $7-10 USD per meal.
