Step By Step How to Make Sushi
Prepare the Sushi Rice
Rinse the sushi rice under cold water until the water runs clear. This removes excess starch. Combine the rice and water in a rice cooker or pot. Cook according to the rice cooker instructions or bring to a boil, then reduce the heat, cover, and simmer for 18-20 minutes.
While the rice is cooking, mix the rice vinegar, sugar, and salt in a small bowl until dissolved.
Once the rice is cooked, transfer it to a large bowl and let it cool slightly. Gradually fold in the vinegar mixture, being careful not to mash the rice. Let it cool to room temperature.
Prepare the Fillings
Slice your chosen fillings (cucumber, avocado, crab sticks, smoked salmon, tuna) into thin strips.
Assemble the Rolls
Place a bamboo sushi mat on a clean surface and cover it with plastic wrap. Lay a sheet of nori, shiny side down, on the mat. Wet your hands with a mixture of water and a little rice vinegar to prevent sticking. Spread a thin, even layer of sushi rice over the nori, leaving a 1-inch border at the top.
Arrange the fillings in a line across the center of the rice. Using the bamboo mat, roll the sushi tightly from the bottom, pressing gently but firmly. Seal the roll by moistening the top border with a bit of water.
Cut and Serve
Use a sharp knife dipped in water to cut the roll into 6-8 pieces. Serve with soy sauce, pickled ginger, and wasabi.
Tips To Make Sushi
The rice should be sticky but not mushy. Proper rinsing and seasoning are key. Use a very sharp knife to cut the rolls cleanly. Wet the knife with water to prevent sticking.
Practice rolling tightly but gently to avoid squishing the fillings or the roll.
