HOW TO GET TO LAGO DI BRAIES BY CAR

The best way to get to Lago di Braies Dolomites is from Bolzano. It will take less than 2 hours driving distance. Bolzano is a nice place to spend a day or more since is beautiful and quiet. The best way to move around Dolomites is renting a car or a van. Otherwise by public transportation you will be limited with the schedule and it will take so long.

If you want to get to Lago di Braies from Milan by car will take around 5 hours. If you want to go from Venice to Lago di Braies by car will take 3 hours. From Verona to Lago di Braies will take 3 hours drive and Verona is a beautiful place to visit in Italy after a road trip in the Dolomites.

Getting to Lago Di Braies By Bus from Villabasa (Niederdorf)

If you are staying in Villabassa (Niederdorf) there are buses going to Lago di Braies Number 442 every 30 minutes. It costs €3 one way and it will take 30 minutes. The main problem with the bus that the departure starts at 8 am so if you want to take pictures alone will be hard. Villabasa area is the closest from Lago Di Braies where you will find a few places to stay.

Lago Di Braies Entrance Fee

There is no entrance fee at Lago Di Braies. So far is free and you only need to pay the parking fee if you stay more than one hour. If you are coming by bus you don’t need to pay anything to visit the lake.

Lago Di Braies Parking Fee

If you are coming by car Lago Di Braies Parking Fee is €8 for the whole day by car. The first hour the parking is free and for 3 hours Lago Di Braies Parking Fee is €6. If you stay overnight with a camper you will have to pay €20 and you can stay overnight in front of Lago Di Braies. But to be honest there are no services in the parking!

How to Park For Free in Lago Di Braies

Parking for free at Lago Di Braies? Yeah! It’s possible! I parked one kilometer before the entrance parking in Lago Di Braies for free on the left side. It was a restaurant (not operating at that time) but allowed parking at that time free of charge.

We parked and we did a beautiful hike 40 minutes thru the forest to reach Lago Di Braies that I can recommend 100% to do it. It’s an easy hike and everything is well indicated plus you will see people around. I recommend to bring water, food and proper shoes if you are planning to hike around Lago Di Braies.

Things To Do In Lago Di Braies

Take Pictures

First of the things to do in Lago Di Braies is taking pictures for sure! The place is so magical and you feel taking pictures and videos to share with your friends and family. The place is peaceful and it can be busy around the entrance where you can rent the boats.

But if you walk around the lake that you can do for an hour you will not find many people. There are a few spots where you have a picnic and even swim if it’s summer!

Renting a Boat

This is one of the most popular things to do in Lago Di Braies renting a boat for an hour, taking picture and enjoying the landscape at this magical place. The schedule starts at 8 30 am until 5 30 pm in summer. Outside summer the schedule for renting a boat at Lago Di Braies is from 10 am until 5 pm.

Prices for renting a boat at Lago Di Braies will be €19 for 30 minutes which can be enough and €29 for an hour where you will have more time for taking pictures and enjoying without being in a hurry. Make sure you come early morning if not maybe you will have to wait long for renting a boat at Lago Di Braies since there is a big line waiting for renting them in summer.

Swimming at Lago Di Braies

Not all the lakes around the Dolomites is allowed swimming like in Lago Di Carezza is forbidden. But you can swim at Lago Di Braies. It can be quite cold outside the summer from June to August. I visited in September and it was freezing in the morning!

Hike Around Lago Di Braies

I already mentioned that you can hike from the parking one kilometer before Lago Di Braies. But you can also hike for an hour from the entrance. You will see beautiful views and even spots where you can have a picnic and taking pictures. The hikes are easy and they are well indicated with people hiking around. Make sure you are bringing proper clothes, shoes, water and food. You always have to be ready when hiking guys!

Visit The Chapel

You can also visit the Chapel at Lago Di Braies located in the seashore. The chapel was built in 1904 and it was designed by , the architect Otto Schmid who also did the hotel at Lago Di Braies.

BEST TIME TO VISIT LAGO DI BRAIES ITALY

The best time for visiting Lago Di Braies in Dolomites is the sunrise first thing in the morning. Since it will be less busy and you can enjoy the place just with a few people. Especially if you want to take pictures and videos. But take note that the water around 10 am will be very clear if it’s a sunny day!

About the weather in Lago Di Braies can be freezing in the morning outside summer season. The boats will be able to rent at 8 30 am in summer and you will have to wait until 10 am outside summer season. If you can’t visit for the sunrise we recommend you to visit around 4 pm since most of the people are leaving after lunch. You will find less people but it can be late if you want to hike around Lago Di Braies.

WHERE TO STAY IN LAGO DI BRAIES

What To Bring To Lago Di Braies

If you want to buy food and water you can do in the entrance at the hotel. Expect to pay expensive prices for this! If you are bringing you own food you can do a picnic around the lake there are a few spots for this. If you are coming outside summer season the weather can be freezing. So make sure you are bringing clothes for winter and proper shoes if you are planning to hike around Lago Di Braies.

After Visiting Lago Di Braies

Lago Di Carezza

From Lago Di Braies to Lago Di Carezza will take 2 hours driving. Lago Di Carezza is small and beautiful for pictures but you can’t swim there. There is parking and you can do a few hikes around the lake.

Costalunga Pass

Costalunga Pass is two hours driving distance from Lago Di Braies and just 10 minutes driving from Lago Di Carezza. There are beautiful hikes to do and you can even take the funicular. If you prefer to relax you will find restaurants to try local food or just for having an expresso before keep going on your road trip.

Val Fiscalina

It will take 40 minutes driving to get from Lago Di Braies to Val Fiscalina. A beautiful hike that can take from 1 hour to 4-5 hours depending the time that you decide to spend there. You will find parking and a place to stay in Val Fiscalina also known as Three Peaks.
