HOW TO GET TO LUCERNE

There are daily buses and trains going from Zurich and Bern to Lucerne. If you drive from Zurich and Bern to Lucerne will be 1-2 hours by car. I went during my road trip from Bern and it was around 1 hour driving.

LUCERNE ITINERARY DAILY BUDGET TRAVEL

There are many ways to explore this Lucerne itinerary. You can go walking around Lucerne to most of the places or get public transportation for around 2€ a single bus ticket. You can go by bicycle too and electric scooter since there are many ways for this.

There are meals in Lucerne at local restaurants for as low as €20-30. Those who want to eat something a bit fancier can have a meal at a mid-range restaurant for around €40-60 or even less if you have someone to split the bill with. Dinner at a top restaurant in Lucerne can go for €70-150.

There are all sorts of accommodations in Lucerne. From hostels and B&Bs to apartments and hotels, you’re sure to find one that fits your budget. For example, staying at a hostel or booking a dorm bed goes for around €40. A room at a mid-range hotel or a nice apartment can cost around €100-150.

THINGS TO DO IN LUCERNE AND LUCERNE TOURIST SPOTS

1. Kapellbrücke (Chapel Bridge)

Kapellbrücke (Chapel Bridge) is the most popular in the list of Lucerne tourist spots. Chapel Bridge is a covered wooden footbridge in the river Reuss located in the city center. Chapel Bridge contains interior paintings from the 17th century and it’s a must in Lucerne and in the list of places to visit in Switzerland.

2. Walking around the Old Town in Lucerne

Walking around the Old Town is one of the best things to do in Lucerne. Starting from the bridge you can cross the city center until the Lion Monument. You will find fountains, beautiful squares, bars, restaurants and churches.

3. Löwendenkmal (Lion Monument)

Löwendenkmal and also called The Lion Monument is a rock relief in Lucerne designed by Bertel Thorvaldsen in 1820. The Lion Monument commemorates the Swiss Guards who were massacred in 1792 during the French Revolution times. The Lion Monument is one of the most popular landmarks in Switzerland.

4. Lake Lucerne

Lake Lucerne is the fourth largest in Switzerland and really beautiful. It will be great to walk around Lake Lucerne, swimming in summer or riding a boat if you prefer. You can join to a boat trip or sailing in your own. You will find bars and restaurants around the lake to enjoy the views.

5. Mount Pilatus

Mount Pilatus is a mountain overlooking Lucerne 2,128 meters high. You can choose your activity since hiking around Mount Pilatus there are a few paths. Or you can take the cable car if you prefer more comfort to enjoy the views of Lucerne from the top. Cable car prices for adults is 8 CHF and for kids from 6 to 16 is 6 CHF.

6. Museggmauer & Türme (Town Walls and Towers)

Museggmauer & Türme (Town Walls and Towers) was my favorite place to walk around in Lucerne. The Museggmauer is a well-maintained piece of history and you will see great views of the city.

There are green areas and you can go up to the clock tower. There are 9 towers in total. The Museggmauer has no entrance fee.

7. Spreuerbrücke (The Spreuer Bridge)

Spreuerbrücke (The Spreuer Bridge) is the second one of the wooden footbridges in Lucerne. Spreuerbrücke was built in the 13th century. It’s not so popular as the Chapel Bridge but it’s a must in the list of things to do in Lucerne.

8. Get The Views From The Towers

Apart from visiting the towers and walking around. One of the best things to do in Lucerne is getting the views from the towers to the city. There a few of them and if you have a sunny day you will love those views.

9. Jesuit Church

Jesuit Church is a Catholic church and the first large Baroque church built in Switzerland north of the Alps founded by Ignatius of Loyola in 1534. A beautiful spot that you can see from the Capel Bridge.

10. Hofkirche St. Leodegar

Hofkirche St. Leodegar is a Roman Catholic church located near The Lion Monument just a few minutes walking distance. Hofkirche St. Leodegar was built in parts from 1633 to 1639 on the foundation of the Roman Basilica.

11. Views from Hotel Chateau Guetsch

Views from Hotel Chateau Guetsch were my favorite viewpoint in Lucerne. You can go up walking it will take around 15 minutes from city center or you can get the elevator. Once there you can enjoy the views from the top of the parking or having a drink in the bar of the hotel.

12. Verkehrshaus der Schweiz (Swiss Transport Museum)

Verkehrshaus der Schweiz (Swiss Transport Museum) is opened in July 1959 and exhibits all forms of transport including trains, automobiles, ships and aircraft. You can spend a few hours in the museum and especially one of the best things to do in Lucerne with kids.

Verkehrshaus der Schweiz entrance fee is 32 CHF for adults included Media World and 22 CHF for students and free for under 6 years old.

13. Lucerne History Museum

Lucerne History Museum is a small museum where you can learn about the history of Lucerne. It will be a great introduction and it will take 1-2 hours the visit. Lucerne History Museum entrance fee is 10 CHF for adults.

14. Art Museum in Lucerne

Art Museum in Lucerne is located inside the KKL building a very modern building where you can find a bar and a Concert Hall. If you like art the museum will be one of the best Lucerne tourist spots to visit. Art Museum in Lucerne entrance fee is 15 CHF for adults and 6 CHF for students.

15. Lucerne Train Station

Lucerne Train Station is located in city center next to the Art Museum in Lucerne. You will see a beautiful building and you will pass by for sure if you are traveling around Switzerland by train.

DAY TRIPS FROM LUCERNE

16. BERN

The day trip from Lucerne to Bern is a must or you can skip if you visit the capital of Bern for more days as I can recommend you. It will take around one hour to drive or even less if you go by train. Bern has beautiful parks and it’s a nice place to walk around, enjoying swimming around the river or the nightlife.

17. Jungfraujoch

Jungfraujoch will take you the whole day as day trip from Lucerne. Jungfraujoch is 3400 meters high and you will get amazing views. Also you will have to visit the popular Sculptures at the Ice Palace.

18. INTERLAKEN

Interlaken is only one hour drive from Lucern and it’s one of the best road trips that you can take. You can do hikes, take funiculars and enjoy the vibe of the town full of bars and restaurants.

19. BRIENZ

Brienz is less than one hour drive from Lucerne and it was one of my favorite spots to visit in Switzerland. Brienz isn’t so crowded as Interlaken and the views in the lake are amazing.

You can walk or go by bicycle around the lake, swimming and other activities. Plus a few spots to park your camper to spend a night around the area.

20. THUN

Thun is a beautiful small town more than one hour drive from Lucerne. Half of the way between Interlaken and Brienz the other extreme of the lake. There are plenty of bars and restaurants in Thun city center and it’s so peaceful to enjoy the sunset swimming.

21. LAKE ZUG

Lake Zug will take you less than one hour to drive from Lucerne. You can swim around the lake or hike up to enjoy the views. The water is so clear and the green scenery is so perfect for taking pictures and enjoying a day.
