What are eSIMs?
An eSIM, or “Embedded eSIM,” is a standardized SIM card that is built into your smartphone, tablet, or smartwatch during manufacturing. Unlike traditional SIM cards, which come in physical form and need to be inserted into a device, eSIMs are embedded and can be activated digitally.
An eSIM functions much like a traditional SIM card, storing data that are necessary for your device to connect to and communicate with your mobile network. However, as the name suggests, an eSIM is embedded into your device – it’s a small chip that’s soldered to your device’s motherboard, and it can’t be removed.
eSIM Advantages
The eSIM technology has several noteworthy advantages:
- Convenience: The primary advantage of an eSIM is convenience. It allows you to switch between carriers or plans without having to physically replace the SIM card. You can activate a new plan or change carriers directly from your device’s settings.
- Space-Saving: As devices become smaller and more compact, eSIM technology helps manufacturers save space. This saved space can be used for other features or to make devices smaller.
- Dual SIM Capabilities: Many eSIM-enabled devices also support a physical SIM card. This means you can have two different phone numbers or data plans on the same device.
- Ideal for Travel: eSIMs are a boon for travelers. Instead of buying a local SIM card in each country, you can simply download a new eSIM profile for your destination before you even get there.

What to Know Before Using an eSIM
Before you start using an eSIM, it’s important to confirm whether your device supports this technology. As of now, eSIM technology is mostly available in newer smartphone models, tablets, and smartwatches. But can you make local phone calls in your destination using an eSIM? It's my understanding that I would not be able to do this in the UK when I visit. I'm not worried about calling back home to the USA; I want to be able to place calls within the UK, which I can't do with my USA carrier.

Hi Paul, short answer, usually no. Prepaid travel eSIMs usually want to provide you an easier way to get data connection locally to where you're traveling in, so that you won't need to turn on roaming data for your regular phone. It's easy to get because they can be bought online and activated immediately. However there are a few exceptions.
https://esim.net/travel/super - they have super travel esim
and UK vodafone and o2 offer locals calls and texts with their esims for the UK
Hope that answered your question!
