We will tell you all the tips how to buy a Swiss motorway vignette. It will be really useful and you will need for driving in Switzerland in the highways. I already wrote about my Switzerland road trip and I will write all the details how to buy a Swiss motorway vignette, how much and how it works to be ready for your next trip in Switzerland.
WHAT IS THE SWISS MOTORWAY VIGNETTE
If you want to drive in the highways during your road trip you need a Swiss Motorway Vignette. What’s The Swiss Motorway Vignette? The Swiss Motorway Vignette is a sticker that you will have to put in the front of your car visible in the windscreen. If you rent a car in Switzerland it will be included but make sure you check it out.
Be careful if you drive into the highways without the Vignette you can get an expensive ticket in Switzerland in the same way with the speed limits. The Green signs will be indicating the highways mandatory to have the Vignette and the Blue signs are the secondary roads where you can drive without the Vignette.
How To Buy The Swiss Motorway Vignette
You can buy the Vignette in the supermarket, post office and petrol stations. If you a renting a car in Switzerland you will not have to buy since they have already in the rental company. The Swiss Motorway Vignette costs 40 CHF and it will last for one year.
Make sure you buy before driving in the highways. Otherwise you will get a huge ticket: 200 CHF! If you are planning to drive in Liechtenstein you can also use the Swiss vignette in their highways same than in Switzerland.
Do I Need To Buy The Swiss Highway Vignette
It’s not necessary to buy the Swiss Vignette if you don’t drive in the highways in Switzerland. But it will save you a lot of time when driving around the cities especially in the Norther part Zurich, Bern, Basel and Lucerne. You can drive between those cities without entering the highways but it will take you longer time.
I barely used the highways in Switzerland in the French part. But if you are planning to drive in the German part you will save a lot of time as I mentioned above. It depends on the road trip that you want to have in Switzerland.
SWITZERLAND ACCOMMODATION EXPENSES
The main of the Switzerland trip cost is the accommodation. As you know prices are really expensive for accommodation in Switzerland. The cheapest that you can find for a dorm in Switzerland is around €40 especially in Interlaken where most of the backpackers go. If you want to have a room on your own prices can go to €80-100 for a budget hotel room good enough for two people.
In both cases you will have breakfast included. If you are looking for luxury accommodation in Switzerland starting from €150-200 and it can be more expensive in high season in Switzerland.
How to go down the expenses for accommodation in Switzerland using websites to have free accommodation like Couchsurfing and Bewelcome. You can also go for a volunteer and camping. If you are hiking in Switzerland and you can do wild camping in Switzerland you will go down your Switzerland trip costs.
Also if you are traveling in a road trip in Switzerland as I did with your van or your rental car if you sleep inside your vehicle in places that they are allowed to do it. There are also Airbnb for €60-80 and you can get $30 USD off your first booking with AirBnB when you sign up with us!
BEST TIME TO VISIT SWITZERLAND
Switzerland is beautiful all year round. Timing your travel highly depends on what exactly you want to experience and, to a certain degree, how much cold you can tolerate. There are four seasons in Switzerland, and each one has its pros and cons.
Summer is the most crowded and winter if you are looking for sky resorts. We would say the best time to visit Switzerland is Autumn and Spring can be the least crowded and where you will find the best deals for accommodation.
CASH AND ATM IN SWITZERLAND
Switzerland is one of the largest banking centers in the world. Credit cards are widely accepted. Cash will be needed for parking but there will be no problems with any kind of payment in the country. The exchange rate is 1€=1.07 CHF.
Having insurance while you are traveling outside your home country is very important. Make sure that you have one too, to keep you safe in your trips around the world.
