HOW TO GET TO CAMIGUIN

Camiguin is an Island Province in the Philippines, located in the Bohol Sea. It is 10 kilometers off of the Northern coast of Mindanao. There are a lot of ways for you to get on board and explore the Island.

GETTING TO CAMIGUIN TO GO BY PLANE

If you are getting to Camiguin Island by plane. Camiguin has its own airport in Mambajao. Cebu Pacific offers regular flights to the province. For travelers coming from Manila, its either you make your way to Cagayan de Oro or Butuan City. There are flights coming from Clark in Angeles City to Cagayan de Oro where you can connect by bus and ferry, or by plane to Cagayan de Oro and Camiguin like we did.

We took our flight in Clark to Cagayan de Oro. From there we went by bus to Balingoan Port and finally we got to Camiguin by ferry to Benoni Port. GETTING TO CAMIGUIN FROM CAGAYAN DE ORO

If you are getting to Camiguin from Cagayan de Oro. From the International Airport of CDO, you need to head to Agora Terminal for you to reach Camiguin Island. You can go there by riding a van, bus or even taxi. In the airport, there are Express Vans offering trips going to Agora Market. They are located in front of the Arrival Area and fare costs 200 PHP or $4 USD. Travel time would be 30-45 minutes.

Agora Market Terminal offers van and bus headed to Balingoan Port. Fare would be 150 PHP or $3 USD for a 2.5-hour trip. From Balingoan Port, you’ll be able to ride a ferry going to Benoni Port in Camiguin. Fare would be 205 PHP or more or less $3-4 USD. Travel time would be 1.5 hours. You also have to pay 15 PHP Terminal fee and 5 PHP for enviromental fee before going to Camiguin.

GETTING TO CAMIGUIN BY FERRY

There are 3 main ferry ports going to Camiguin. These are Baligoan Ferry Terminal, Benoni Ferry Terminal and White Island Ferry Terminal.

The main one is Port Benoni, which tourists always choose. Benoni Port is the port close to the main town of Mambajao.  There are a lot of ferry companies you can choose from depending on your budget.

There are available ferries from Bohol going to Camiguin and it is Super Shuttle Ferry 21. Super Shuttle Ferry leaves in Jagna (Bohol) and arrives at around 5PM in Balbagon. One-way trip costs PHP425 or $9 USD.

It is one of the 3 operational piers in the Island of Camiguin. It is located in Barangay Balbagon, 3 kms away from the town Center of Mambajao. In the port, there’s available transportation going to place in the Island. Standard minimum fare going to the town center would be 10 PHP.

CURRENCY AND ATMS IN CAMIGUIN

Camiguin Island is situated in the Philippines, so currency would be Philippine Peso (PHP).$1 USD is equivalent to PHP54.09.

There are a lot of money exchangers in the island. You can exchange your currency from banks and pawnshops as well. There are banks in the Island where you can withdraw with your ATM cards. Common ATM Machines in Mambajao are BPI and Landbank ATMs.

INTERNET AND WIFI CONNECTION IN CAMIGUIN

Internet was little bit challenging for us in Camiguin since we couldn’t connect everywhere online. In the area of Yumbing has LTE signal and Tongatoc Cliff has phone signal. BEST TIME TO VISIT CAMIGUIN

The Philippines has only two seasons- wet and dry season. The best time to visit Camiguin is during dry season that falls on the months of February to April. Though it is peak season during this time, you’ll be able to enjoy your Itinerary without having to worry about the rain, since most of your activities will be climbing and going to beaches. Click here to know more about the weather in Camiguin.

TRANSPORTATION AROUND CAMIGUIN

There are many available public transportation modes in Camiguin, like multi-cabs and tricyclesMotorela is the local name for tricycle which can be found all over the island. They operate either westbound or eastbound for as low as PHP 10.00 for a short trip depending on the distance.

Another option is to go by Multi-cab. It is a type of jeepney which is smaller and the sides are open so it can accommodate up to six passengers. For private rides in multicab and motorela prices are higher and you have to negotiate them depending on the distance.

From Benoni port to Mambajao a private motorela can cost 300 PHP, a multicab can cost 400 PHP. For a day private tour around the island with a motorela can cost 1200 PHP and 1500 PHP if you do with a multicab.

DAILY TRAVEL BUDGET FOR CAMIGUIN

The daily expenses for most of the tourists visiting the Island of Camiguin would be a total of $30 USD per day. For food you can spend $5-10 per person. You can rent a motorbike for $7 for two people and you have to add budget for boats and entrance fees in Camiguin. In accommodation rate of $10-15 USD, if you go on a budget. You can get more comfort starting from $20-50 USD and get luxury rooms for $80 USD a night. There are local carenderias where food can cost $1-3 USD depending on your order. Also, more options of restaurants for local or foreign food start from $3-5 USD in Camiguin where you can find pizzas, burguers, pasta and more foreigner food. There are many options in the check point for restaurants and you can get there by walk, jeepney or tricycle.

For transportation, if you move around Camiguin with motorela, it can go as cheap as PHP 10-20 per person for short distances. Of course, it will go higher if you go for long distances and private service. You can expect to pay $20 for a day trip around the island from 8 am to 7 pm with a private driver by motorela or multicab.

We chose this driver +639368498257 he was really nice and giving us the best rates and so professional. Just contact him and he will help you in your trip Camiguin. For a day trip expect to pay 1200 PHP and he will drive you around the whole day to different places.

You can rent a motorbike to go around the island for 400 PHP and distances aren’t really big so expect to add 100 PHP extra for petrol.

ISLAND HOPPING TOUR FEES IN CAMIGUIN

This budget will always depend on how you want to spend your vacation. There are both cheap and expensive choices that are offered for tourists.

Places like White Island will charge 450 PHP for the boat ride (you can split between 6 people maximum) plus 50 PHP for entrance ticket to White Island. The island closes at 5 pm.

Mantigue Island boat costs 600 PHP (same you can split with 6 people maximum) and the entrance to the island costs 10 PHP plus 50 PHP for snorkeling around Mantigue island. If you overstay 4 hours in Mantigue Island you have to pay 50 PHP extra per hour.

CAMIGUIN ITINERARY

Day 1 Camiguin Itinerary

If you are getting by ferry early morning or in the airport you will have the opportunity to make the most of your day. First you will have to go to Mambajao from the ferry where most of the places to stay in Camiguin Island are. You just put your things in your accommodation and ready to explore your first day Camiguin itinerary.

You can go to White Island during the day and you can spend there around 2 hours. It depends how long you want to stay there. We spent 3 hours since there were nobody around noon time. If you want to do more activities you can go for Giant Clam Sanctuary if you have plenty of time. For sunset the sunken cemetery can be the best option. For dinner you can go to the checkpoint in Camiguin and look for the restaurant that you like it. There are Western options like pizza and burgers and local carinderias around the area.

WHITE ISLAND

The Naked Temptress of Camiguin. The stunning White Island or Medan Island is 10 minutes away from the northern coast of Camiguin. There are boat rentals available for only 450 PHP in Yumbing area near the check point. Some resorts also offer their own day tours to visit this pristine, powdery paradise. You have to pay 50 PHP extra for the entrance. It’s popular to visit in the sunrise. Our choice was visiting at lunch time and we were alone in the island for a couple of hours. You can rent umbrellas in White Island for 150 PHP. You can stay until 5 pm when White Island close until next day in the sunrise.

GIANT CLAM SANCTUARY

If you are a person who love to dive and see the wonders of the sea, this is the best place for you! You’ll be able to experience diving to see giant clams and their colorful seaworld. The entrance fee is 150 PHP.

SUNKEN CEMETERY

This place also made Camiguin famous. The sunken cemetery is represented by a huge cross of what had been an old chapel. There, tourists can dive and explore what’s beneath it. The boat costs 150 PHP.

Day 2 Itinerary in Camiguin

For the second day in your itinerary in Camiguin. We will suggest going to Mantigue Island. You can stay there up to 4 hours walking around, swimming and of course snorkeling. You can go San Roque by motorbike or tricycle. We were three of us and we rented a tricycle for the whole day so later we had the opportunity to check waterfalls and more places. Make sure you are bringing a dry bag and snorkeling mask if not you can buy them or rent in the port.

After Mantigue Island you can go to explore waterfalls Tuasan Falls and Katibawasan Falls. To end the day Hibok Hibok Ardent Hot Spring since they close late it will be the perfect way to finish your evening in Camiguin.

MANTIGUE ISLAND

The Island of Mantigue is mesmerizing when you get off of the boat. The Island is beyond beauty with its crystal clear waters, where you can also have a close encounter with corals and fish even while riding a boat. There’s a wide variety of fish species that lives in the crystal clear water surrounding the Island.

For visiting Mantigue you have to ride a boat from San Roque close to Benoni Ferry terminal that will cost you 600 PHP maximum 6 people and it will take 15 minutes to get to Mantigue Island. There is an enviromental fee 10 PHP and 50 PHP entrance fee for snorkeling. You can also rent snorkeling gear in case you aren’t bringing your own.

TUASAN FALLS

It was once a hidden gem of the Island. It is about 2km from the main Camiguin highway and now accessible to most travelers because of the newly built cement road. The entrance fee costs 50 PHP.

KATIBAWASAN FALLS

Katibawasan Falls are located at the foot of Mt. Timpoong, Barang Upper Pandan, approximately five kilometers southeast of the Municipality of Mambajao. The waterfall measures 250 ft high. There are a lot souvenir shops around the area and you will be welcomed with a big smile by the locals once you enter the premises. The entrance fee costs 50 PHP.

HIBOK HIBOK ARDENT HOTSPRING

Nights in Camiguin can sometimes be cold and one way to chase it off is by having a quick dip in a warm running water. This place is usually the best place to meet locals and other tourists. It’s only 3 kilometers far from the highway on the way to Yumbing and the entrance fee is 50 PHP. It’s a perfect place for relaxing and we recommend as last stop during the day as we did.

If you want to experience Station of the Cross in a brand new way or you simply want to trek up the mountain, visit here! The trek is approximately 1 hour long before you can reach the top where the last station can be found.

SAAY COLD SPRING

Saay is a beautiful and well-maintained cold spring. It is located at the foot of Mt. Hibok-Hibok in Quipasa Mambajao, Camiguin. The cold spring has one small and one medium pool. You can enjoy the spring without paying because entrance fee is free. But, they accept donation for the improvement and maintenance of the place.

TONGATOC COVE

You’ll be able to stop by at this place while on the way to Sunken Cemetery. It is cliff with a stunning secluded cove. It is worthy for a visit where you’ll be able to notice its deep blue waters, inviting you to swim. You can also take pictures while standing on the cliff. There is no entrance fee for visiting Tongatoc Cove.

THE OLD SPANISH CHURCH

The Old Spanish Church is located in Bonbon Catarman in Camiguin Island. The church also known as Gui-ob Church, and it was destroyed and partly submerged by volcanic debris. Upon arriving at the location, you will find vendors selling religious stuff. You’ll be able to see the remains of once beautifully structured Spanish-era building.

SODA WATER POOL

The Soda Swimming Pool in Camiguin is the first of its kind in the entire Philippines. It is located in the town of Camiguin and the name is inspired by old folks who used to taste the water and according to them, it tastes like soda. The place is surrounded by lush greenery of plants, bushes and trees. The entrance fee costs 30 PHP.

ZIPLINE AT MAHINOG

The first zipline in the Island. The Zipline’s distance is more than 700m from Station 1 to Station 2. Fee of the Zipline would be PHP400 or $8 USD.

LANZONES

It’s the most popular fruit in Camiguin. The color is yellow and you have to peel to taste. Prices are around 40 PHP per kilo and you can find them everywhere when it’s the season.

It is available in carenderias around the area. It is a local chicken soup made with coconut milk. It’s so delicious and prices are so affordable for half a dollar. Rachel’s favorite apart from mango!

The typical merienda in the island which looks like a crepe that is crunchy. It is made of ground cassava, quickly fried and drizzled with latik. They sell kiping in the most touristic areas like waterfalls and hot springs.
