Kalanggaman Island is a small island located in Palompon, province of Leyte and island in the Visayas archipelago in the Philippines. For us it’s considered one of the best places to visit in the Philippines. We have been already talking about all the things to do in Malapascua and we will do extensively about Kalanggaman Island day trip one of our favorites in the Philippines!

The island is called Kalanggaman because of its bird-like shape. “Langgam” is a Visayan word for “bird.” During the storm, sand bars that protruded in the eastern and southern ends of the island were flattened by raging waves. Kalanggaman island is considered one of the most beautiful island in the Philippines. It may be small but it didn’t fail to strike us with its beauty. Its clear waters and the ever so popular sandbar makes the island even more incredibly unique. It’s only 750 meters and you walk around the island in just a few minutes. The sand bar can be until 250 meters long!

How to get to Kalanggaman Island from Malapascua

Kalangamman Island Day trip is one of the best of the things to do in Malapascua, for sure! It takes around 2 hours by boat to get to Kalanggaman Island and the day trip costs 800 PHP. The boats depart from Cocobana Beach Resort located in Bounty Beach around 9 AM and return at 4 PM at the same place. The trip is little bit long 2 hours from Malapascua but totally worth it to go to Kalanggaman Island. It can be wavy on the way back to Malapascua.

How to get to Kalanggaman Island from Manila

From Manila, you have to fly to Tacloban airport and then travel to the city by tricycle 150 PHP to reach the van terminal in Tacloban. You can also go by taxi or if you prefer on a budget you can get a multi-cab going to Tacloban town. Once in the town of Tacloban, you can get a van for 3-4 hours to Palompon town. From Palompon, Kalanggaman is only an hour away by regular boat. You have to register in Palompon Tourism Office and hire a boat going to Kalanggaman Island. Prices of the boats are for 15-30 people and it costs 3000-4000 PHP to hire them.

Fly to Ormoc City in western Leyte, the flights are only coming from Cebu City and Cebu Pacific is the only company flying to Ormoc City. From Ormoc you have to take a van or a bus to Palompon and it will take you an hour and a half by van to reach Palompon. Van prices are around 120 PHP and bus is a bit cheaper, it only costs around 60 PHP but it will take more than 2 hours to reach Palompon since it’s stopping in previous towns. Once in Palompon, you have to register in Palompon Tourism Office and hire a boat going to Kalanggaman Island. Prices of the boats are for 15-30 people and it costs 3000-4000 PHP to hire them.

How to get to Kalanggaman Island From Cebu City by Boat

From Pier 3 ships are leaving to Palompon, the trip last 5 hours and it costs around 400 PHP. Once in Palompon same process than above. Go and register in Palompon Tourism Office and hire a boat going to Kalanggaman Island. Prices of the boats are for 15-30 people and it costs 3000-4000 PHP to hire them.

You have to pay an entrance fee of 500 PHP in Kalanggaman Island for foreigners and 150 PHP for locals. Kids until 5 y/o get in for free! And your lunch is included if you are doing the Kalanggaman Island day trip from Malapascua.

If you want to stay overnight in Kalanggaman Island the fees are 750 PHP for tourists and 225 PHP for locals. If you are bringing a tent you can pitch in Kalaggaman Island, if not, they will charge you 300-400 PHP for renting a tent.

There are no hotel/hostels in the island but there are a some places where you can buy drinks, coconuts and even barbecue!There are also avalaible snorkeling gear just in case you aren’t bringing yours at around 150 PHP.

Apart from snorkeling and swimming, you can also rent kayaks for 150 PHP, paddle boards for 150 PHP, and a banana boat ride for 500 PHP for 15mins.

If you are planning to visit Kalanggaman Island the best time to visit Kalanggaman Island is from March to May and from November to February. What time is best to see the sand bar in Kalanggaman Island

If you want to see Kalanggaman Island with the sand bar and not hidden. Based in our experience was getting better around sunset time. Ask locals to make sure you know when is low tide. If it’s high tide they will not allowed you to walk in the sand bar! Since the current of the water can be strong, you have to be careful with this.

There are no food sellers in the island, only a couple of kiosks sending food and water. There are grills to cook your own food.

There is no drinkable water and there is no electricity.

There is almost no phone signal in Kalanggamand Island, so the data is weak.

There is no electricity in Kalanggaman Island so bring your power bank to make sure you can charge your phone and devices.

Bring your sunblock.

Bring your own food if you are planning to spend the day or make sure if you do a day tour to Kalanggaman Island the food is provided. Bring cash, don’t expect there are ATM’s or exchange offices in paradise ha!

Relax and enjoy sunbathing, swimming, paddling, kayaking or you can even try the banana boat.

Take pictures everywhere with your camera.

Take underwater shots with the done or underwater camera.

Of course if you have a drone fly it around Kalanggaman Island!

Very Important: Please make sure you bring a bag to collect your trash so you can keep clean Kalanggaman island and as we always do. By the way our little Han never forgets about it and before swimming he makes sure that he collects a bag of trash. Also if you have a spare plastic bag for the trash you can use for collecting the garbage around. And we will keep Kalanggaman amazing for the next time that we are visiting!
