Step By Step How to Make Chicken Paprika
Prepare the Chicken
Season the chicken breasts (or thighs) with salt and pepper on both sides.
Sear the Chicken
In a large skillet, heat the olive oil over medium-high heat. Add the chicken and cook until browned on both sides, about 4-5 minutes per side. Remove the chicken from the skillet and set aside.
Cook the Onions and Garlic
In the same skillet, add the chopped onion and cook until softened, about 5 minutes. Add the minced garlic and cook for an additional 1 minute until fragrant.
Add the Paprika
Reduce the heat to medium. Add the sweet Hungarian paprika and smoked paprika (if using) to the skillet, stirring constantly to prevent burning, for about 1-2 minutes.
Create the Sauce
Pour in the chicken broth, stirring well to combine with the paprika and onions. Bring the mixture to a simmer.
Return the Chicken
Return the seared chicken to the skillet, cover, and let it simmer for about 20-25 minutes until the chicken is cooked through and tender.
Thicken the Sauce
In a small bowl, mix the sour cream and flour until smooth. Gradually stir this mixture into the skillet, cooking for an additional 5-10 minutes until the sauce is thickened and creamy.
Serve
Serve the Chicken Paprika over cooked egg noodles or rice. Garnish with freshly chopped parsley.
Tips To Make Chicken Paprika
The flavor of the dish heavily depends on the quality of the paprika. Use authentic Hungarian sweet paprika for the best results.
Paprika can become bitter if overcooked. Ensure you only cook it for a short time before adding the liquid. Mixing the sour cream with flour before adding it to the sauce helps prevent curdling and ensures a smooth, creamy consistency.
Traditional accompaniments include egg noodles or rice, but it also pairs well with mashed potatoes or a simple green salad.
