1. Mashuni

Mashuni is a salad with coconut, tuna fish and Curry. They use coconut milk and oil for cooking. It’s served as Maldives breakfast with chapati bread. The price of Mashuni can be around $3-4 USD.
Breakfast with a View in Local Islands

It’s quite popular to have breakfast in the beach if you are staying in the hotel with view to the beach. We did at Planktons Beach in Hulhumale and it’s so peaceful and relaxing having your Maldives breakfast in the beach.

You will get surprised how good are Maldives breakfast in the guest house. This Maldives breakfast above is at Sandy Heaven Maldives in Gulhi Island. The most complete and the best staying in a local island based in our experience. Croissants, coffee, hot dogs, bread and eggs are an incredible one!

One of the most popular Maldives breakfast is the floating breakfast in luxury resorts. We had this amazing floating breakfast at Park Hyatt Hadahaa.

A perfect way to start your day swimming in the pool and taking beautiful pictures. Maldives floating breakfast are complete with fruits, coffee, eggs, pancakes and bakery.

2. Hedika

Hedika is the name the short eats or snacks in Maldives like samosas. They are everywhere. Prices are around 3 Rufiyaas per piece. It means you can eat 5 pieces for just $1 USD.
3. Roshi (Chapati)

Roshi is a Maldivian chapati flat bread which is usually served for breakfast in Maldivian food.

4. Bajiya (Maldivian Samosa)

Bajiya is the Samosa. It’s usually deep fried and filled with fish tuna, onions and curry. Prices are 4-5 pieces for $1 USD. One of our favorite ones in this Maldivian food list.

5. Gulha

Gulha are small ball fried similar like samosa or dumplings with tuna, onions and coconut. Prices are cheap and you can buy 5 pieces with only $1 USD.
6. Hot Dog Rolls
Also as part of hedika this short orders we found mini hot dog rools. It’s usually made of chicken and deep fried served as a spring roll. It’s not with pork since Maldives is a Muslim country.
7. Biskeemiyaa

Biskeemiyaa is a deep fried spring roll with boiled egg and vegetables. It has no fish inside. It’s also affordable Maldivian food and you can buy 3-4 pieces for $1 USD.
8. Keemiyaa
Keemiyaa is the same than biskeemiyaa above but filled with tuna fish, boiled and vegetables.
9. Biscutlets (Maldivian Croquets)

Biscutlets are the same that hot dog rolls but instead they add tuna and potatoe. It’s similar to a croquet like we have in Spain.
10. Kavaabu

Kavaabu is a deep fried snack made with rice, tuna, coconut, lentils and spices. It’s also very cheap and you can get 3-4 pieces for $1 USD. It can be a little bit spicy but its one of Ruben’s favorite Maldives food.

11. Boshi Mashuni Banana Flower Salad

Boshi Mashuni Banana Flower Salad is a mix of slad with coconut and banana flowers. It’s served with curry, tumeric and also with chili. Apart from Maldives cuisine and Maldivian food you can find as a Vietnamese cuisine.
12. Mas Riha

Mas Riha is fresh tuna and cooked with coconut milk and curry. It’s a popular food in the Maldives in local restaurants. It’s usually served with hot tea or bread chapati.
13. Kukulhu Riha

Kukulhu Riha is chicken curry cooked with coconut milk and a few spices like ginger and green chilies. A Maldives traditional food to try.
14. Rihaakuru

Rihaakuru is fish tuna with a fish paste. The color can be very brown is one of the most Maldives traditional food.
15. Theluli Mas

Theluli Mas is a fried tuna fish cooked with chili and garlic. One of the Maldives traditional food that you can’t miss it.
16. FIHUNU MAS

A barbecue fish served with lime and chili. You can also eat with rice as side dish. We had this amazing meal at Nemo Inn in Omadhoo Island. Rachel’s favorite Maldives food.
17. Garudhiya Fish Soup

Garudhiya is a fish soup and is served in local restaurants with rice. The fish is usually tuna with chili and species.
18. Dhonkeyo Kajuru

Dhonkeyo Kajuru is a fried banana cake flavored with rose water, coconut and sugar.

19. Saagu Bondibai

Saagu Bondibai or sago pudding is a sweet dessert sago seed is mixed with coconut milk and condense milk.
20. Handulu Bondibai

Handulu Bondibai is a sweetened sticky rice with coconut milk and cinnamon. A delicious Maldives desserts in this list.
21. Aluvi Boakibaa

Aluvi Boakibaa is a spicy tuna with bake potato. It’s usually served with hot tea.
22. Gulab Jamun

Gulab Jamun is a dry milk powder so sweet and typical from the Indian subcontinent.

Kulhi Boakibaa is a spicy fish cake made with tuna, coconut, lemon and curry and green chillies.
24. Tea in Maldives

Tea in Maldives is the most common drink. People can drink hot tea with the desserts and sweets and also with the snacks. You will see locals in Maldives drink tea any time.
25. Nasi Goreng (Fried Rice)

Nasi Goreng or fried rice we found in most of the local islands in Maldives. A delicious dish with chicken or vegetables with fried egg. Prices in local restaurants is around $3 USD.
Prices Food of Maldives
There are local restaurants and Western. It depends on the food that you would love to try. We chose local options and you can get meals for $4-6 USD per person. If you go for Western Restaurants will cost you $8-10 USD per person.
You will find fish everywhere especially yellow tuna fish. And curries they add to their food in almost all the dishes.

For the first day in Maldives I recommend you to stay in Male or Hulhumale since they are so close to the airport. You will be able to feel the local vibe in the capital Male. You can visit their local markets and try local food.

This is our favorite local market in Male. It’s next to the local market at the end of the jetty port. They are selling fish and it’s affordable you can buy one kilo for $4-5 USD. We saw yellow tuna fish and they are huge more than 20 kilos.
24 Hours Coffee Shop in Male

Male is too busy to walk around and it’s great to make a stop for coffee or tea. Our favorite place was Sea House a 24 hours coffee shop in Male next to the port with strong wifi. It’s open 24 hours and that’s great especially if you have to catch up with work or you just want to send updates to your family and friends.
Smoking Shisha in Maldives

After dinner locals love smoking shisha is always great chance to meet locals and make new friends. After the sunset and having dinner can be the best way to relax and be ready for next day.

Western Meals in Maldives

Don’t think about prices in India, Sri Lanka or countries in Southeast Asia for Maldives. Guesthouses are expensive, local food is affordable, local transportation is really cheap. But speed boats and airplanes are so expensive and also luxury resorts.
We already mentioned the prices above local food $4-5 USD, accommodation $40-60 USD and transportation can be $2-3 USD or $25 to $200 USD for one speed boat ride.
For Western food in the resorts prices will be around $30-50 USD per meal and per person. In the local islands Western food prices will be starting from $10 USD.








Maldives Drinks

For Maldives drinks prices in luxury resorts are starting from $10 USD for a beer and it can be cheaper in Happy Hours. Prices are expensive since Maldives is a Muslim country.
Maldives drinks aren’t allowed in the mainland on a local island and you have to do in a boat 5 minutes far from the island. Small boats are riding anytime of the day. Prices for Maldives drinks or a beer in the boat are $10 USD.
