UHotel was the hotel we stayed at in Penang, Malaysia, 2 nights before going to Batu Ferringhi. UHotel is located in the district capital of Southwest Penang, Bayan Lepas. It’s a very quiet place and a perfect environment for business and working, and has great accessibility for transportation, malls, supermarkets, and restaurants and even local food places. Prices are affordable around the area, what with Tesco just a few minutes walk from the hotel, and a lot of local street food places. UHotel is also very close to the airport, which might be something you would like to consider, especially if you are traveling to other areas of Malaysia or other countries, and will need to take a plane.
UHotel Penang Basic Information

There are taxi services from the airport and from Penang. Fares from the airport start at 30-35 RM.
There are different routes:
Rapid Penang, 102 and 306. Prices are around $1. Buses come every 20 minutes and takes around 20-30 minutes to get to the Komtar bus station in Penang. There are bus services from the airport and rides can take up to 15 minutes. You can check here for more detailed information.
Arriving at the UHotel, we immediately felt how welcoming the people are. Smiling faces all the time, and we knew that they were expecting us. They welcomed us happily, talked to us about how our whole trip was going, and let us go to our room immediately so we can rest. It’s really the most important thing that we first look at when we go to a hotel, the staff. It’s amazing when you feel welcomed and greeted with high energy and great camaraderie. And that’s exactly what we experienced with the UHotel staff.
The hotel design was actually pretty interesting too. They have a focus on art, and you can see the vibey atmosphere right the moment you enter the hotel. The lounge felt relaxed yet still colorful, and there were lots of really nice touch of design all over the hotel.
Facilities, Services and Staff
The hotel’s overall vibe is really friendly and simple. Colorful colors, very happy, respectful and helpful staff, it was really easy to approach them and get support whenever we encounter some hiccups.
Since working was our big priority, they made sure we have a backup internet connection so we’ll not get any interruptions. What we loved was the no-smoking zone policy inside the hotel. If you want to smoke, sorry. You may still do it, but you’ll have to do it outside hotel premises.
We stayed in UHotel’s Deluxe King room which they also call the Saturn King. This room includes the following:
- A king sized bed, plus with extra pillows ready
- 32” HDTV with Astro Satellite Channels
- A Safety Deposit Box
- Electric Kettles, Tea, Coffee, and Hair Dryers, and even anti-theft hangers
- Multiple plugs in various corners of the room, which makes it easy to plug different devices or work anywhere
- Work table with a designated lamp
UHotel will provide for you free coffee, tea and some free breakfast cereals which we loved. Rachel loved mirrors everywhere inside the room 🙂

We spent a lot of time inside our room when we were staying in Penang. We had a long trip from Kuala Lumpur that day, leaving super early, and hitchhiking until Penang. Took us one public bus and 2 private cars. It was a long day, and it was an amazing comfort to find yourself staying in a really great room. My favorite part – the bathroom! Oh who doesn’t love really good bathrooms and hot water? 😉
We started cleaning up ourselves and went out for a quick walk around the area. Tesco is a really good place to buy the stuff that you need, and they even have a food court where there are a lot of food stalls to choose from to eat local dishes. After going back to the hotel, and doing some blog and client work, we spent the evening outside, walking around eating local dishes for dinner.
Eating and Going Around UHotel
We enjoyed eating in Penang. Malay people say that it’s the paradise for food and we definitely agree. Across from UHotel, on the other side of the street, and even around the hotel itself are various food places to choose from – various local food places if you really want that local vibe – Chinese, Malay, Indian, and even Thai food. If you are into restaurants, you will find ample of them around.
We tried many different kind of food like soups, local dishes and there is a vegetarian restaurant too. So, if you are vegetarian just opposite the hotel, you will find your paradise there. Prices for all the restaurants were starting from $1. The most of the dishes weren´t more expensive than $2-3.
There is a Tesco, British chain Mall where you can find everything that you need. It´s open until very late. If you want to buy something to drink and snacks. There is also a court where you can enjoy food in Tesco.
Experience and Recommendation
UHotel was definitely a place you’d like to stay in while you’re exploring Penang and working on a budget. With the varied prices they have, you are sure to find a good value for your money. You can easily get the luxuries of a hotel, while not breaking the bank. You will also be in close proximity to a lot of the local food and scenery, and as a traveler, this is very important. Cozy, simple, and budget, you can’t go wrong staying in UHotel. 🙂
We really encourage you to try various local Chinese noodles, local Malay dishes, and Indian cuisine that is practically everywhere. If you are coming here for a quick stop for work and business, UHotel’s can provide you a place for that. If you want to go around, Georgetown, another very popular place in Penang, is half an hour bus ride from UHotel. Batu Ferringi is also a great place to visit, a beautiful beach in Penang. For us, we were happy and content to enjoy the local vibe surrounding the area. We love that UHotel’s surroundings is definitely quieter than other areas of Malaysia. We felt like locals, going around at night, eating in small street tables arranged for people who want to have dinner outside.
