My first experience in Africa . I spent a week in Banjul , the capital of Gambia . Banjul is very small and underdeveloped . Its surrounded by Senegal . I did the trip with my friend , Sergio . Distances are short but its very slow moving around .
Just landed , you realize you are in Africa . Cut electricity , excavation works , many people sleeping in the street . We joined to a Spanish group , to hire a guide for day trips .
Prices are cheap , specially food . But when you are with a guide , he doesnt usually go to the cheapest place . At that time , it was the end of the Ramadan . In Gambia , 90 % of the population are muslim . We were very lucky to enjoy that experience .
We visited crocodiles . Its very touristic , but you can a get a picture with them . In Banjul downtown , the only touristic thing is a monument . Where you can go up and get the views from the city .
We visited Kunta Kinteh Island , where slaves left . They show us , where they were prisioners . There is a fortress and ruins . We also visited schools , which were in really bad conditions .
A day trip by jeep in the jungle . It was really fun . Suddenly a tree in the middle of the way . Later , the jeep was broken . So . people pushing the jeep . This is Gambia ! You never get bored !
We visited Gambian mangroves . Nothing special , but you always have fun in Gambia . People are always happy and smiling . They called us Tubac , to white foreigner people . They always try to ask for moeny , clothes or whatever . But its very safe country .
The best experience was the invitacion to the Ramadan in Musa´s and Ousman´s home . They were living in a very humble place . Sharing the house with another family .
Ramadan was so interesting . Ousman and Musa introduced us their families and we were praying together . It was very warm , 40 degrees . There were 6 of us , tubac , praying with the people .
After praying , we had luch . They sacrificed a lamb and they cooked at the same moment . They shared the food with their neighboors . While they were cooking , people were dancing and singing . Gambian people loves music .
When we finished our day trip , we used to visit the beach or the swimming pool . Beaches are long and they were empty . Water was warm and sunset was really nice .
At night , the routine was relaxing . After swimming , we went for dinner and beer . In Gambia , when you leave your acommodation . People offer you everything you can imagine , girls , drugs , have dinner , place for drinking …
Gambia is very poor country , talking about money . Most of the people were asking for money and clothes . An interesting thing ! In Banjul , at that time , there was only one traffic light . So , it became in a meeting point . Homosexuality garantized you a spot in jail !
We visited Serekunda market . Serekunda is the largest city in Gambia . They showed us , how to make batiks . You can see , how the women can hold the basket with their head . They were holding babies tied to their back .
Food is tasty . Its usually fish and rice . Sauce are hot , but its not too much . Julbrew is the local beer . The Gambia , was one of my best experiences traveling around the world .
